My beautiful baby girl called sugar who is nearly 2years old keeps bleeding. At first i didnt know where or who it was coming from, just about every 3 weeks i would notice a spot of blood on one of there beds. Only noticed it was sugar when i was doing her nails and she did a poo and some blood came out. Took her to the vets and they gave her some antibiotics and said bring her back if it happens again. So 3 weeks later happened again, and the vets are telling me its up to me what to do. She 's pefectly happy in herself, eating, drinking and running round. But they want me to decided whether or not to spay her, as this will stop it happening and it may or maynot cause her problems in the furture. They think it may be a cyst which burst on her cycle causing the blood. I'm terrified of losing her tho if i get her spayed. What would you do? Leave if and hope for the best or get her spayed and still run the risk of loosing her? Many thanks natalie.

Hi there so sorry to hear about Sugar's problem. Is your vet a cavy savvy vet? If not perhaps you'd feel happier after speaking to a cavy savvy vet for a second opinion.

Hi! Which country are you in, please? We have got a piggy savvy vet locator for our UK members on the top bar.

Has your vet checked for bladder stones or sludge (x-ray)? urinary tract infections can be very persistent and some variants of cystitis do not react well to antibiotics. Are they sure that it is a burst cyst or a problem with the womb?

Can you get to an exotics vet in your wider area for a second opinion?

I agree with the recommendation to get a second opinion. My Terk had an ovarian tumour which caused her to bleed. Has she been scanned or xrayed?

My pig also had intermittent bleeding - that turned out to be an ovarian cyst.

I took her to the vets at Tunstall that was on the recommended list at top of page and she sure a different vet each time and they both said pretty much the same thing. Am i silly to just leave it with her been fine in herself or will it make worse? so hard not knowing what to do for the best. They did do any ultra sound but said everything looked normal.thanks

Are you sure it's from the anus and not the other end? I don't mean to worry you but my girl was spayed yesterday for the same issue (fresh vaginal blood) and they found a uterine mass. I would 100% definitely opt for an ultrasound / xray. However, Pebbles had both, and nothing showed up. They only found the mass when she was opened up. Pebbles was also fine in herself, but if that would've been left in her for any longer it would of been a different story.

If it were to come to the point where surgery is necessary, you definitely need a cavy savvy vet x

Thing it is from the other end someone changed the title and put anus. Thankyou il try and find a good vet just dont seem to have any locally.

Hope you can get her sorted, :luv:

My Ellie had problems with recurring UTI's & then bleeding, sometimes quite badly, i could never seem to pinpoint the exact source of the bleeding, but it seemed to be when she pooped as opposed to wee'd just before i got her sorted.
She also was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst approx the size of a walnut, this was picked up on a conscious ultrasound scan (not too dear either, think vet said was around £20) & then due to her age (6+yrs) she couldn't be spayed but had HCG (chorulon) injections instead 2 jabs approx 7-10 days apart. this was back in march & touch wood no bleeding since.
She was also generally her usual self although a little quieter than usual when she had the heavy bleeds.

here is Ellie's thread from march, if its any help?
