I'm currently creating a program that will keep a record of guinea pigs weight and overall health.

I'd like to know what everyone on here would find useful for a program - obviously tracking weight is the main one - i was also going to put an expenses tab on so we can work out how much we do actually spend on our pigs.

This will take a good few months to complete but once it is finished it will be available for free.

So what would you find useful?
 
Oh wow, this sounds great!

What about some sort of option for unwell piggies, for example times/amount of feed taken for those who might be syringe feeding, and the same for amount of water?

I love to know how much i actually spend on my piggies! I think it might help with my denial that i don't spend very much!
 
Also worth adding bathtimes, ivermectin doses, nail clipping.

So if each pig had a medication tab an grooming tab that should cover those.

I was also going to add a calendar with reminders for vet appointments i could also set up reminders for grooming sessions and medication.

Anything else that would be helpful?
 
we have five, three in together and two separate, we keep a book saying what foods they like and dislike, with lots of pigs we find this helpful, so the right foods go in the right cages.
 
So, so far we have

Separate records for each pig

General info - name of the pig - space for a picture - Date of birth (with estimate checkbox, will also display the pigs age)

A weighing tab (that will also give you the option to view weights on a graph)

A medication tab - time - date - medication - amount (a box to tick when medication has been given.

Grooming tab - More of a schedule - check box for bathtime, nail clipping, exercise, brushing.

Feeding tab - (will have a think how to set that one up)

Looks good so far :)
 
Sounds great!

I always find a general notes section helpful on these types of programs, not essential just useful.

Can't wait, I've been looking for one of these types of programs but tend to find them more geared up for dogs and cats.

A montage with pigtures of different breeds? With all the lovely piggies on this forum I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem getting pics. Or maybe a 'pig of the month' photo (not sure how practical this would be though). Or a seasonal photo that could be changed quarterly (like a piggy snuggling in a cosy for the winter, or on the grass eating dandelions for the spring etc).

What sort of program is it? Is it a general computer program, or one of apps for iPhones/smartphones? I know you say it will be free, but maybe you could charge a small token amount for the program and donate the proceeds to rescues. Just a thought :)
 
It will be a general computer program :) Would be nice to try and get it working on iphones and such though :^-

I would rather this stayed free as i'm sure this will benefit everyone's guinea pigs and not the owners. Hopefully this program will encourage daily health checks, weekly weigh in's and maybe even spot problems before they get out of hand.

I'm sure rescue's would have a very good use for it too and i'd hate for the rescue's to end up paying for it.

I like your idea about the seasonal pictures - however i would hate to see some of the guinea pigs get over looked on here.

No name for it yet - i like the fundraising idea! we'll name it when its done then we can try and organise a nice big fundraising for its release :)

Pictures- i'm still stuck on - they will only be appearing on the main menu - i could have pictures rotating on a timer - however this will take a computer longer to load and also how do we choose the pictures without people feeling left out ?

I'll do some snapshotsover the next few days so you can see how its coming on. Then i can get everyone's opinions and comments - then were all building what we want together :)

I've currently been stuck on some coding for the past 3 hours :)) Hence why its going to take awhile :))
 
Why dont you have a fundrasing event for the picture. Kinda like a raffle, designate each entered photo with a number then just draw it out of a hat?

Brilliant idea!

So we'll have a fundraising for the name and the picture! :)

My husband came up with the brilliant idea of when clicking buttons (browse, ok, save, cancel ect) that they make a wheeking or rubblestrutting sound :)) Not sure how i can get that working but i'll certainly have a go!

I also need a colour theme? Any ideas?

This is the "New Record" layout so far. This isn't the finished product though - the appearance needs a whole new make over!

The picture will be changed to the one from the fundraising and the "welcome" will be changed to the fundraising name :)

What a fantastic idea! As someone who fosters as well as having my own pigs something like this would be brilliant. A great way for foster/rescue piggies to have their own details that can then be handed over to their eventual new mum or dad when they eventually move on to their forever homes. Will look forward to seeing the finished product.:)

Glad there are so many people that would find this useful :)

What do you think to popping a link to the guinea pig forum on one of the pages? Or is that a waste of time seen as we all know our way here anyway lol

I think a direct link to the forum could be a good idea. It would be a useful shortcut for existing members, and it may also encourage non-members to join.

12 hours spent doing some coding! mallethead I'm losing my touch!

Having another change around with the front page due to coding issues {:|

And having problems getting the weight chart to read from the data- but i could release the program without the weight chart and then send out an update inbreeding

Urgh i'm having a break for the rest of the night lol

I will say its been 7 years since i've done this and i'm rather impressed at how much i remember!

Fingers crossed this could be finished in a months time!
