I don't like to sew if I can help it. I saw a crochet pattern for a kitten nest and would like to adapt it for my girls (I know I need to watch so their nails don't get caught). The pattern suggested rug yarn or tee shirt yarn. I do have some "yarn" that's really fabric cut in one long piece. Would that be best for something like this? Other than the fabric, what would be the safest for them? I have some fleece yarn and would crochet it tightly. If I crochet it, should I then line it with fleece? What do you think?

Gonna pop this in guinea pig chat for you hopefully some of our creative people may be able to advise

I would go with cotton or something if you were going to do it as acrylic or polyester wouldn't be too friendly if they did nibble it... The T-shirt yarns etc are good because they aren't too 'stringy' so they'd be less likely to eat a whole length, just nibbles of it.

To be honest I'd be a bit nervous of them chewing it though and would only use something like that under supervision and wouldn't leave it in the cage with them just in case... They are unlikely to but if they did pull a bit of yarn free, it's going to get a bit tangled up inside them if they do eat it... Good question though! And I'd love to see the results... our boys love to get involved if me and my OH are knitting or crocheting :)

I started one last night with the fleece yarn. We'll see...... Anyway, I totally agree with you - they should only have it available to them under supervision. We have 2 under the bed storage boxes that we turned into "playgrounds" for each of my girls so they could sit in the living room with us. I was thinking that that would be the ideal time for this little cave / bowl project. I'll see how it goes when I get finished. Thanks for the reply!

Let us know how you get on and how your piggies like it, sounds like an interesting project. Would love to see photos.
