Following on from the Guinea Pig Insurance thread, I am wondering what peoples biggest vet bill has been for a poorly guinea pig?

As most places don't seem to do guinea pig insurance, should we conclude the vets bills for them are low, or is it that veterinary medicine hasn't invested enough in guinea pigs and there aren't the comprehensive treatments available like we have for dogs and cats. Personally i think it's a bit of both. I can't imagine guinea pig surgery costing a fortune as they are so small.

Anyway, whats your vets bills been like? Anyone managed to build up a whopper yet? :D

Lucky for me i've had no vet trips yet except for Jessies mite treatment and that was only 45pound inc consultation fee, antibiotics and the 3 ivomec injections :)

Hiya,

Touchwood I've not had many vet problems. Cuzzy's treatment cost £24.00 for his mites.

Louise
:)

£30 quid all together for Ambers poorly feet that included 2 appointments and treatment.

We've only had one visit so far for an eye infection. Cost £27 for the consulation and the eye drops. Happy to say its all cleared up now :D

We had one for £28, that was £14 for the consultation and £14 for the antibiotics. Unfortunately the piggie died, I think the infection was secondary to a tumour or something. But at least we tried our best for her. :'(

about £100 pound for having eddie put to sleep and then cremated. And also about another 100 for neutering two guinea pigs.

£104 emergency consultation + £14 for meds when my poor Max was ill with diarrhoea late one Sarturday night, then another £27 for two further consultation appointments.

So far the biggest bill is just over £100 then. Not too bad really for an emergency situation. So maybe it's true that the insurance is not worth it. Maybe £5 a week put aside for vets bills would be better?

biggest vet bill so far has been £170 all together for iowa broken down it was £15 for consultation then it was £75 for teeth check-up which he needed to be knocked out for then it was £45 for overnight stay the other £35 was on drugs and feeding mixes and things
i almost feel through the floor when they told me the price all together

I think it was £110 at the CCT. But that was for 2 pigs (one of which Abnoba took on) and they stayed there (CCT) for about a week.
1 op was to remove a 'stone' lodged in the piggies girly bits - it was too big for her to pass.
The other pig had terrible fungal probs & literally came back naked from the ribs back - she also had lots of abscess.

Blinking good value for money I say.

That's the sort of thing I was worried about! I am a bit of a worrier, I have to admit. I knew the bills wouldn't run up to the thousands but I knew the worst case scenario would be a couple of hundred, and I was thinking about medicine being needed long-term too, but I'm just learning about guinea pigs. Overall most people's bills have seemed to be pretty reasonable, not really worth insurance. I've had cats before and know from experience that insurance can be a very good idea!

This has been an interesting (and reassuring!) post, wish I'd thought of it now before I asked about insurance for guinea pigs!

thats what i do i put £50 away a month just incase but i have a few animals so if you only have one piggy or even two that would be a good idea

£230 for x-ray with anaesthetic, complex bladder stone removal, several courses of antibiotics, second x-ray and finally euthanasia costs :( Surgery alone was £90 for half hour of vet's operating time.

I always put some money away each month to cover unexpected bills - don't happen too often thankfully, but when they do they can be pretty high.

£70 for an emergency consultation for bob.

other than that about £50 when he had mites, diaroea and wasnt eating

£45 for a mis - diagnosis of mites which turned out to be ringworm >:( ....... I have changed vets.

£220 for hysterectomy and temporaily anorexia. Spent 3 weeks in there.

I've never had to take my piggies to the vet yet thankfully, lets hope it stays that way ;) (the most I've payed for one of my pets was under £20 for a consultation + eyedrops for conjunctivitus, but then my nannan paid for that (she took me and insisted ::)))

£280 emergency c sec, anti bi's, pain meds rehydration and consultation

I've had 3 trips to the vets with John Anderson for mites...cost £18 in total for 3 lots of drops and 1 antibiotic injection.

I've been quite lucky. I've never had to pay for treatment but I've taken them once for the initial check-up £12 and then again when Fluffkin bit Boogie on her lady bits (ouch!) but didn't require treatment, and once more when I thought Fluffkin and a chest infection but infact was generating a clicking sound by grinding her teeth! So that's 3 x £12 = £36. S'all right.

£175 for an investigative op for Mitzi, overnight stay and meds . . . and then she had to be pts because of what they found :'(
