We got our new member of the household today and just wanted to know can you feed Guinea Pigs Rabbit food?

Ive heard that they cant eat Rabbit food but Rabbits can eat Guinea Pig food.

Any Advice please.

Pretty sure they can't eat the rabbit food but have no idea about rabbits being able to eat guinea food. Personally I would stick to species-specific foods to make sure they all got the right balance of nutrients :)

No, they can not eat rabbit food. Guinea pigs need extra vitamin C than rabbits and in guinea pig food it has vitamin C added to it. Otherwise the guinea pig gets scruvy. Also if your rabbit food is a selective mix then the guinea pig can choke on seeds etc.
I feed my guy Supa Vurgess Excel for guinea pigs.
Also he will need vegetables to also give him vitamin C. About a cupful a day. But only give one vegetable, give a small amount, wait 24 hours, see for soft stools and then give another. You got to introduce very slowly.
Some vegetables are bad for them so please google it first.

Also I hope that you arent keeping the guinea pig with the rabbit. That is very dangerous.

Oh and no rabbits cant eat guinea pig food has rabbits dont produce much vitamin D so thats also in the rabbit food

Many thanks for that.

No our new friend is not living with our Rabbit

Can you please tell me what Vegetables are ok to give her please.

Hi and welcome to the forum. There are tons of veggies and fruits that your pig can eat and also many that they cannot. Some of the common veggies I give to my pig are romaine lettuce (no iceberg lettuce, it's bad for them), tomato/cherry tomato, red, green and yellow peppers, broccolli, celery, and lots more. Take a look at this. http://theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42

That is good, to not put them together it is very vey dangerous but I am happy to hear they arent.

Well you can feed them Romaine lettuce(not other types), parsely, red/green/yellow bell peppers, kale, carrot tops, brocoli, outer leaves of cabbage (inner leaves are too watery), corriander, cucumber, spinich (small amounts), carrots, apples and oranges this is what I mostly give my guy.

All fruits must be given very rarely as the acid in them can give them sores on the side of thier mouth, maybe every week or twice a week and only a small amount at that. Somethings like cabbage, kale, brocoli should just be given every second or third day and not a whole lot at that as they are gassy and guinea pigs dont pass gas so can make them sick and even be fatal. Spinich is high nutrients so please just feed it every odd time. My guy actually doesnt like this. Just give him a very small amount the odd time. Carrots too shouldnt be fed a whole lot as they have natural sugars in them. Red bell peppers should only be fed once a week but they are good to feed once a week as they have alot of nutrients and vitamin c so try and feed them once a week. Yellow bell peppers can be fed every day if you wish, green bell peppers can be fed every two or three days. I would though suggest not feeding things every day even if they are safe as your guinea pig will get bored.

Some things are posion and should be avoided like lettuce(except romaine), potatos, tomato leaves, onions, chocolate, 'human food' etc.

I will try and find a good website for you on vegetables as there is alot you need to know and hard to type it all LOL..

Oh and ill explain more about introducing slowly. For example buy some romaine lettuce, give a small amount and then watch for loose stools, swelling, any unusual behaviour, if none after 24 hours then give another amount, slighly bigger amount this time, again wait 24 hours then you can feed it normally. Then after the two days (experts say 24 hours i like to wait 48 hours) go and buy some for example again some parsely, do the same by ggiving a small amount when you feed the romaine to her. Watch for signs, wait 24 hours, give some more, wait 24 hours, then you can introduce the next thing.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are quite common in the whole feeding thing. Just for guinea pigs need vitamin c more than rabbits and guinea pigs eat alot more than rabbits and need about twice as much veg as a rabbit. I feed my rabbit about half a cup of vegetables which i feed my guinea pig a full cup of vegetables a day. I also leave pellets out full time for the guinea pig and just a small amoutn for the rabbit in the evening.

I will try and get you that website

Here are some websites

Also make sure too have unlimited hay. Timothy is best but if she is young try Alfalfa hay. Which it gets older change to timothy though. Also unlimited fresh water. Change the water every day.

Many thanks for your advice

Will have a look at the websites later today

Again many thanks :)

A vet nurse told me guinea pig food would be ok for a young rabbit, as it has more protein. But I don't know, it makes more sense to just feed them the food that is made specifically for them. :) They're not very closely related so really need different food.

Rabbits can't eat guinea-pig food - it contains too much vitamin C which will eventually poison your rabbit. Guinea-pigs can't make their own vitamin C which is why they need to be supplemented with it, but rabbits can (which is why they don't need to be fed it).

You know how vitamin C is water soluble, and well we learnt in home ec that you can't have too much of it, so is it only in really really huge amounts that they can't have it? Or what?
