I am faced with a predicament. As some of you may know, my girls live in a hutch in a brick outhouse with a carpet wrapped around their hutch. The thing is, i'm not sure what to do in the summer. Me and my OH are arguing because he says we should take them out of the outhouse and have them in the yard during the summer months as he thinks they'll be too hot in the outhouse. Problem is, we live in a back to back house with just a yard (think of the houses in Coronation Street) and I just wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them in the yard as i'd worry about them too much. But then on the other hand, am I being selfish. I really need to know what's going to be best for them, outhouse or yard and if they do need to go in the yard, how can I not worry about them as much? :-\ :-\ The door of the outhouse is open all day.

hmm difficult. Maybe you should assess the temperature when the summer comes? Go and stand in the outhouse in the sun and see how you feel. If you wanted to keep them in there you could put a fan in maybe?

I would worry more about strong sun and them getting overheated, at least the outhouse would be more shaded? :smitten:

I would guess it would be cooler in the out house, the reason I think this is when i lived in the cottage the larder was made of brick and always cool.

Like starla said it depends on the temperature really. We may not actually have a very hot summer anyway.

I don't follow his logic re "colder next winter if they stay in the outhouse all summer" - surely they wouldn't have the same amount of bedding or the carpet throughout the summer months.

I'd be inclined to leave them in the outhouse if that is where you have peace of mind.

mine live in a stone outhouse, and they are fine during summer although they are out on thr garden most days in the summer so they are outside when its hot, but they go back in the outhouse overnight we have just built a new big run for them which we have put padlocks on to make sure nobody can get into them.. I used to have a small backyard at my old house, they were in the shed them and we built a run with a wooden floor in that i washed down each night. so you could always put them into a run outside during the day, if you make a run with a lid they will still have shade and you could padlock it, and just take your guineas inside when your not there.

I am bringing my two girls who currently live in a hutch in the shed out onto the patio for the summer (in the shade). Although they are perfectly happy in the shed I think the fresh air and outdoor noises would do them good. I'm going to get a cover to put over the hutch for night time and we have a security light out back so I would know if anyone came near the hutch. But I know how you feel, I will be a bit worried about them to start with! I am sure! ;D

some people keep their guineas in a shed or garage all summer anyway, for security :)
