hey whats the best thing to keep guineas teeth down ive seen lots of wooden things everywhere and i brought a pack of gnaws but no interest ? so what would you all suggest ?@)@)@)
 
Do they have lots of hay to munch on as that will help their teeth? Also, when you give them their veggies, don't cut the pieces too small as leaving them bigger will encourage them to gnaw at them to bite pieces off to eat.

The don't always show instant interest in things - Jensens had a wood stick for 2months in his cage and I've only just seen him chew on it for the first time today :))

as said Hay will also help their teeth a great deal :)
 
Yes hay and veg keep them down but the 'toys' also help to keep them entertained. I have bought some dangly things which have wood and loofah on, got them from P@H. I have also just bought another dangly toy with wood vegetables on and a bell at the bottom, not heard it ding yet though! :(|)

There are also those salt ring things too, or the mineral blocks.
 
The best thing is hay, hay, hay and more hay.

Seriously, hay should make up about 85% of a guinea pigs diet. I don't free feed pellets so my pigs tend to eat more hay than the might if they fattened up on pellets all day. On top of that they also get their one-daily-cup of veggies.

Hay, hay, hay - of a good quality.

Salt licks and mineral licks aren't good for guinea pigs. Guinea pigs have no need for salt to be supplimented in their diet and they get all of the minerals they require from the vegetables, hay and good quality pellets that you should be feeding them.

Many guinea pigs also have a tendency to not drink enough water, meaning that your pig will have a high concentration of salt in its body which isn't good for a person, nevermind a human, and can cause problems later on, especially in the kidneys that filter bad-stuff from the body.
 
oh right thanks for giving me that advice about salt licks i nearly brought one the other day :( good job i never :)
 
I never bought a salt thing but it was with the guinea pig stuff today in the shop, you have to be so careful. :(

I give my pigs heaps of cucumber for hydration although I have seen Toffee on the water bottle, not seen Teddy yet, I seriously think he was the runt because he is so small and timid. :(

Sorry for advising that, it is only because I saw it in the shop. :(
 
I stuff hay inside a wicker ball bought from the willow warren and they spend ages tugging it out. I actually have 2 balls that hang on chains from the top of the cage but the willow one sits on the floor. They really enjoy it.
 
Mine too love willow balls but not sticks for some reason & a plain brown paper bag stuffed with hay generally provides a lot of entertainment, they dive in them, sit on them, chew them but some sadly just ignore them :))
