Hello everyone

We are new to piggies and adopted two gorgeous girls

Cleo around her bottom has what looks like dandruff and she is losing hair when we stroke her

I thought it could be mites so treated her and her sister but then some big clumps of fur came out

We took her took her to the vets and the vet tested for ringworm which was negative and said just to treat again for mites this weekend and if not any better go back

She does scratch but without knowing what is normal I'm unsure

Am I panicking over nothing or do I take her back to vets

I have included photos this was at its worst it's not as bad now but still there

When the vet said to treat for mites, did he prescribe something? Over the counter treatments aren't really strong enough. If he didn't, I would ask him for a prescription treatment, or look for another vet, as he doesn't sound particularly cavy savvy. Someone more knowledgeable than me will advise on what treatment you should ask for. Best of luck.

Thank you i had just.used over the counter stuff but she said to use it again in two weeks.time

It sounds as if you need to see a piggy savvy vet.
I’m no expert but this doesn’t sound right to me

Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis and good quality treatment. Over the counter staff is too low dosed to cut through an acute outbreak and is wasted money as it will only prolong any suffering. You'll pay more for having an advanced case treated than seeing a vet straught away and getting on top of the problem.

Please make sure that you vet considered mange mites as well as a fungal skin infection (which may not necessarily be ringworm, there are lot others around as well).

If you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, we may be able to help you more since we have members and enquiries from all over the world, with very different climates, background and vet/rescue access. Did you adopt privately or from a rescue? if from a rescue, does it come with a mandatroy quarantine?
