Whats The Best Hay

Timothy & rye hay is extremely tough & stalky. Rye is a fast growing grass & has a high sugar content, Ings hay is grown in water meadows & is similar to meadow hay. Calcium wise, meadow & timothy hay have the lowest calcium at around 0.4 / 0.6%. Orchard grass is around 0.33% :)

I used Hay for pets, the timothy and rye, and the Ings, which is beautiful!

Thanks for all your replies. I've just bought a while bale of meadow hay for £4.50 from a farm, which looks and smells as good as the lunnun hay I've been using but I get twice as much for half the price! We user a layer over the bed as week as a big pile twice daily for eating, burrowing etc. Since adding 4 th piggy the hay supply had been dwindling very quickly!

I've recently started using the Devon Meadow hay from the range. I like it, it's soft long pieces and quite a lot of green colour in it. You do get the odd twig in it. I used to love timothy hay from pets at home but it's gone up from 7 pound to 9 pound odd which is just so expensive for a small bag. B&M sometimes has good hay aswell, the hay with herbs en dandelion mixed in. But they aren't always on stock.
Also in the past I've used bales of farm hay from farm and pet place. But they are hard to store and in winter they always felt damp so I stopped getting them from there. May have to try some of the websites mentioned :-)

I just use pets at home hay. Since that's where I got my boys I've always used that and they thrive on it :-(

Wow! one month @Wigwig . Your guinea pigs musn't eat much hay ?

I only have one, and he adores grass, I live in the countryside so I have lots of grass round all year, so I just pick him a huge amount each day. He will eat the hay I give him, but not much, whereas he clears the grass.
Unless its my own hay, in the summer months I pick the grass and sun dry it, then give it to him later in the year, he never leaves a single scrap of that lol.

Lucky piggy!

I know this is an old post, I'm just having a look as I've opened a bag of pets at home hay and it feels slightly damp, it doesn't smell right. I'm going to take it back but without a receipt I'm guessing I'll just have to exchange.

I used to buy bales at my local farm shop for horses. But the hay would always lodge itself in my hands and I got sick of spilling out tiny pieces of hay out my hands

Online definitely seems like the better option from looking at all these replies, I hate waiting for packages though! :D

I get a bale of hay from the local farm and put it in a weelie bin. The posh hay I get from timothyhay.co.uk never had a bad bag yet.

We use 3 different hays (to mix it up a little). We use p@h timothy hay, alfalfa king timothy hay and meadow hay:

- They seem to love them all, but I must say the alfalfa king looks really nice and green, it has a lot of long and thicker strands, which are great for piggies' teeth. And a lot of the flower bits, which my piggies LOVE. I did notice that it's a little dusty though, but it doesn't seem to be a problem, would definitely recommend it!
- Never had a real problem with p@h hay and my girls seem to love it too. The only thing i would say is that it's not green at all and i did find a stone in one bag.
- The meadow hay is also nice, a lot of green strands, it is shorter and thinner though (as you would expect from meadow hay I think). Great value for money too, 3 massive bags for around £14. Piggies love it

I'm happy with all 3.

the timothy hay from timothyhay.co.uk is lovely at the moment and mollie and benjie are eating soooo much of it. it's the 2014 batch :)
