hi i was wondering what the diarrhea medicine is called for children that can be used for guinea pigs with the runs?
,its used for children and can be brought from the chemist?but is safe to use in guineas...

Although it is not a children's one, Imodium. Dose is one Instant Melt, but can't remember the dose for the capsules.

Do you know the cause of the diarrhoea?

sally and amy were rehomed yesterday and they have been in my house since tuesday all have been great eatting drinking the lady took them home yesterday dinner and amy was eatting drinking running around and lunch time today she was quiet the lady said and has the runs and now wont eat, i feel it maybe the change in food...
ive never had any problems with her here so i feel this is what it is ,but the lady is going to take her the vets 2moz,i feel so bad now,but she was 100% well yesterday

It does sound like the change in diet could be a possible cause.

Make sure the new owner knows:

- Plenty of fluids - ideally a rehydration solution like Dioralyte.
- Stop all veg for a day or two, until her tummy has settled down again.
- Syringe-feeding as she's not eating.

I'm not 100% sure on the best method of administering them, most tablets are crushed and mixed with a little water, so may be worth trying one Melt "melted" in 1ml water and syringed to guinea.

thanks laura i have email earlier about fluids and the veg stopping also told her to mush some pellets and mix in poo:)>>>and told her to get some science recovery off the vet and probiotic is this right?
ive also told her to avoid antibiotics unless really needs them as i told her it can some times make the runs worse and can make the flora bad and make her even ill, is this the right thing ive said?
she also asked me about giving her some vit c which i said i dont think it will make much difference has she really need the recovery feeds xx

It depends on the cause of diarrhoea whether antibiotics are good or bad, but if it's "just" soft mushy poop as opposed to watery diarrhoea then a dry diet should turn it around pretty quick with no need for ABs.

Good point on the probiotic, it did slip my mind!

It is the fluids and syringe-feeds that are important at the moment, most preparations already contain Vit C.

The melting one, you can just stick one in their mouths. Try and get it towards the back. It melts very quickly, but if they do manage to spit it out, just shove it back in.

Diocalm tablets can help. However, I would not give the pig any medication at the moment, just plenty of fibrous food. Usually, this form of diaorrhea only lasts a few days at the most.

Like you said it is probably the change in food that has caused the runs.

A diet of dry food (hay, pellets) and water for several days should do the trick.
