I read somewhere that piggies can't have iceberg lettuce, but I'm not sure why? Is it a total ban, or can they have a little bit in moderation?

I only ask because iceberg is the only type of lettuce my children eat, and I hate to buy stuff that's only for the guinea pigs, it's a waste of money. The pigs like romaine, but the kids won't touch it. Also one child eats little gem, but the pigs won't touch that ::)

Ice berg has no nutritional value what so ever its just water. It will also gives animals the runs

Personally I don't think buying them other veggies is a waste as in the long run giving them a varied diet is better for their health and will go towards keeping them clear of bladder sludge and stones later in their lives.

Iceberg is a no no because of the water in it and has no nutritional value. Have you tried hot house (round lettuce) it's only 42p and would last 2 pigs ages. :)

I agree S & T, I but the round lettuce or other kinds (except for iceberg) when they are reduced. Most of the veg in my trolley is for the piggies, well we have a little ;D I also get the bunched carrots with leaves on as they prefer the leaves and we have the carrots, same with fennel tops, radish leaves etc...

I used to give it all mine before i came on here as i thought it was great for them as all i heard was fresh veg etc so by giving it them i thought i was doing right but obviously i wasnt ;D they did LOVE i though ::) but there is such a variety of things out there that theyll love and give them a great balance of nutrition

;D I have a animal veggie day where I go to the cash and carry just to get fruit and veggies for the animals,I usualy come out with a full trolly

Really ;D ;D I bet that costs a fortune with your lot :D :D

LOL same here Graham! You do have to shop around for bargains though if you dont' go the c&c and I do my food bill is about £15.00 a week for the 6. Thinking of ditching herbs though I just can't keep them fresh!

Around £175 a month just for veggies but that does the piggies the sugar glider, parrots, goats reptiles ::)

Of course I don't mind giving the pigs veggies, but I only have two and it's not worth buying special stuff for them as they don't get through it. I prefer them to eat the same veggies as the rest of the family, that way everything gets used up (especially things like broccoli where piggies eat stalks, and we eat the rest).

I haven't tried round lettuce on the piggies, but I know the children don't eat it.

Never mind, they can live without lettuce, they can have spinach, kale, cabbage and cauliflower leaves for their greens.

Awww thats great news that they get given other thigns though - but fresh is best and may i ask if the things you give them are cooked ? if so then they have no nutrients in as it will all go from the steam etc and is useless for piggies O0

Mine love Kale but Cabbage, they hate it I don't know if they are just lazy and don't want to be bothered chewing when lettuce is a bit softer! It drives me mad as cabbage is 29p in Lidl! :tickedoff:

My sister attempted to give the pigs iceburg lettuce while I was on holiday (even though I only put romaine lettuce on the list of veg 98)) and little Milly got a slight case of dirrohoea which had to have vet attention in the end.
My family eats quite a range of fruit of veg so theres always something in the veg.
I try to give them something different everday as in the long term its best for them

No I don't give the piggies cooked veg. When I'm cutting up and peeling whatever we have, I give some raw bits to the piggies, cook the rest for us. That's why they eat at about 4-5pm, because that's when I'm cooking our dinner. They are good for eating the bits I would otherwise throw away, like carrot peelings, broccoli stalks and cauliflower leaves :)

If we're not eating anything suitable, they get carrots or cucumber or whatever is spare in the fridge. They like half an apple too as a treat.

I get a sperate basket in Tesco and fill it with veg ;D Only costs about £5 - £10 a week. Tesco seem to do something every week where you get three bags of veg for £2. :o
