Hi
I was grooming my boars today and on one of them had some dreaded hair around his gland.

He has medium long hair and although glossy all over except near his rear it becomes coarse.I trimmed the hair around his gland and noticed he had yellow seeds or eggs around his behind bit.I;m not sure what it is but I'm taking him to the vet this week to get him checked over.
I check my boys regularly so this is new,any ideas could it be mites?

Hi! I am sorry, but could you please post a picture. Could you please also specify which gland and are the yellow dots sitting in the skin, on it or are they attached to hairs on the bum end, in which latter case you are most likely dealing with hay or fur mites (previously also known as static lice - the yellow/brown bits are actually egg cases)?

hi
hes back in the outdoor run/cage but i think your right these yellow spots are sitting in the hair around the gland /bum area. You can spot them with your eye so they are not tiny.i'll try and take a photo. How do you get rid of them, can i pick them out while i wait for an appt?

Hi there - as wiebke said is it possible to attach a picture?
I'm not sure where u mean with his gland exactly. But it could be lice or mites as suggested above.
But also there could be a possibility its fly eggs if near his bum &any long hair he has may have been urinated on &attract flies.
If it is fly eggs they need to be treated urgently/immediately due to the risk of flystrike.
See in the banner for more info.
But if it is fly eggs trim his bum hair as short as possible where the eggs are to get rid of them. Give him a little bum bath with tepid/warm water to reduce any urine on his hair. Make sure all eggs are gone or they will hatch into maggots!
&check his penis carefully inside &out, also his anal sack to check there is no debris or eggs there either.

Hopefully its just mites or lice but he'll need a vet visit to get the correct diagnosis &medication to treat It. I wouldn't advise over the counter remedies as they may not be strong enough to treat him.

Ps use the upload a file button next to post reply button to add a photo from your mobile or pc.

Oh &edit
If its mites/lice there will be a peppering of them evenly generally.
If its fly eggs there will probably be a few patches of them they look like tiny yellow rice shapes, there may be more than one on a hair shaft too.
Xx

Can we please see a picture first? We do not recommend to treat on spec. The good news is that if it is hay/fur mites, they are the least bothersome of the skin parasites that guinea pigs can get.

I've taken photos and trimmed his fur, washed his bum , nothing I could see around his willy area !
He's staying in tonight till morning . I'm about to repeat process with boar number 2

Have your checked the grease gland? It doesn't look like fur mite eggs to me!

Fur mites typically look like somebody has taken a pepper mill and applied it over the bum end of the piggies.

I cleaned the gland well and the hair is very short now around his behind. His willy was ok . This boars hair tends to get very matted at the back compared to my other boar . I do groom them regularly
I've washed and trimmed my other boar although he was a bit mucky but no yellow cases . I'll check in the morning as they were both getting stressed with the rinsing .

well I'm glad to say it doesn't look the right shape for fly eggs.
Is there a possibility it could be boar glue? (I've only ever had girls so not overly familiar with boys issues).
A couple of my girls have had very mucky/active grease glands. The grease has usually been more of black/brown/grey colour but could still be because the grease gland (if your boys have a noticeably yellow grease gland it looks lightish in the picture) is it hard lumps or softer, more pasty, greasy in consistency?

They get very mucky , it's usually a browny colour . I'm going to get them checked over by the vet . They've had quite a bit of fruit lately and I'm wondering if it's made them go more than usual ?
Thanks fir your input

It looks like dried pus to me- please have your piggy checked for a grease gland abcess tomorrow if possible.

Our Billy has an over active grease gland and this causes the hair around it to get greasy and matted.

So all ok phew
Over active gland issue with discharge as they are middle aged piggies. so they've had their bums shaved even shorter. Just keeping an eye on them make sure they are clean !
Thanks everyone photo to follow
