Hey everyone... I need some help...

When we first adopted Basil he weighed about 950g, I weighed him again on the 12.2.08 and he weighed 9.05g

I have weighed him again today and he has dropped to 850g. Thats 100g lost in like 2 months (i think)

Last night I could hear him making that "backwards hiccup" noise alot. I thought he was eating too fast so I took his food out and it seemed to stop but he was doing it again this morning before I put his food back in.
He has been making this noise for a few weeks now... I thought nothing of it.

What could be wrong with him? other than the weight loss and the hiccuping noise he seems to be his normal self... he is being more cuddly with me now though... I dont know why lol

What do I need to do to make sure he is okay? Is a vet appointment nessisarry?
When I took Basil to the vets in January (I think) she said he was perfectly healthy...

please help... any advise welcome :)

Thanks!

HI BW :smitten: awwwww poor Basil :( :( :(
Do you think it could be an URI ?? any runny nose or other signs love??
It's early enough in the day that you could either go to the vets or at least call them for some advice O0
If it is they'll probably give you baytril 0.3 - 0.4ml twice a day, i'm saying the lesser amount cause my vets said once they're smaller in size you should reduce the amounts given.
I'm hoping Mary comes on but for you it might be a bit late..... it's what 12.30pm ish now for you? i think we're 3hrs difference at the moment, it's 3.30pm here.
I've heard the others also saying to put vicks on a cloth or on the outside of the cage so it's not going to irritate but the vapours will do the trick O0
Sending healing wheeks and loves for little Basil :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Vicks in hot water in a bowl by the cage works wonders if a piggy is particularly chesty can cover part of the cage with a towel to keep the vapours in (like we would stick our head over a bowl with a towel on or heads). If you are at all worried a trip to the vets is what I would do O0 As Glynis said they would prbably give baytril.

Thanks heaps Glynis :) its 1.30 in the arvo over here lol

He does drool quite a bit sometimes... and I havent noticed any runny noses...
He does actually make a sort of grunting noise sometimes too...

Upper respiritary infection? is that like a cold or somthing?
Is it contagious and can I do the vicks thing now just to be sure?
Ill wait till mum gets home a bit later before I call the vets... :)

Thanks again :)

Hi love, yep it's a cold and not sure about contagious but it could be a good idea to separate till you've spoken to the vets. With the drooling have you had his back molars checked?? this can be a sign that they've overgrown.... is he eating lots of hay and pellets to help grind them down?? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get some info so one of us can help.
Great idea Vikki i like that, do the bowl with the warm water and vicks O0 it's an old fashion remedy that works wonderfully O0
The way you say grunting is it when he eats or when he's breathing??
I'm afraid i'm going to have to go love Dee has a class ending at 4pm and that's in about 10 mins so sorry :'(
I'll have paws and pinkies crossed for the little guy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: Hugs for you too sweetie, chat soon loves from us both :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I'll come back on later when i get a chance and see how you're going, keep us posted O0

Thanks Glynis :)

We havent had his teeth checked yet but if we take him to the vets ill ask them to check... he gets his food mix everyday which has alot of seeds in it and alot of grass... I havent been feeding them hay latley but I really need to get into the habbit of doing it again ::)

Hmm.. the grunting? its sort of when he sniffs the ground and I think sometimes when he breathes... ive only really noticed it today...

Thanks again Glynis :)

Signs of a URI:

Refusal to eat or drink (anorexia)
No feces (as a result of not eating)
Labored breathing, wheezing
Sneezing, coughing

Crusty eyes, eyes that are almost sealed shut
Discharge from eyes or nose (read about normal Eyes)
Dull and/or receding eyes
Rough or puffed-up coat
Lethargy, hunched posture

I just found this on Guniea Lynx... basil doesnt have any of these symptoms... except maybe 3 and 4 (in bold)
I am about to do the vicks thing... how much do I put in compared to the hot water?

i would use a baby dose for basil. really hoping he is alright. have you been to the vet yet? the hay/straw here in SA is very dry and dead looking due to the drought. if he has only 2 of the symptoms( i am no expert) i would hazzard a guess to an allergy. has there been any chnage in bedding, food or the likes? sending hugs and cuddles to you and little basil. please keep us updated. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks choloe... Ive just made an appt for the vets tonight at 6.30
hmm... no changes in bedding or food...

He is actually having a difficult time eating which could explain the weight loss... I will get the vet to look at his mouth... should be easy as he is really tired...
I havent seen him poop today but I have got him in the 'vet' cage with fresh paper and a blankey so ill watch out for wees and poos...

Ill let you know how the vet visit goes... :)

Thanks again for everyones help :)

Hope the vets visit goes ok small tea spoon of vicks to 500mls (ish) of hot water is what I use O0

Thanks... ill do that now if I can find the vicks lol... ive been searching all day!

BW Vicks can be bought from both supermarket and the chemist O0 O0 O0
Not too much you don't want to over power Basil with the smell it's to be a hint of the aroma only... :) :) :)

Is Basil still drinking ?? and trying to eat food cause that's a great sign :smitten:

Come on little Basil :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

sorry I didnt do an update... I got banned from my aunties computer!

We took him to the vets and he said he was fine. he got a thourough looking at and his teeth trimmed.
I do want to make an apointment with the specialist rabbit vet to get his very back teeth checked but other than that he is fine :)

Last night I was clippling his hair and he started to move around, he did a piddle on me, lay down as FLAT as he could and did a biiigggg yawn... then he fell asleep it was soooo cute. Until he was awoken by a bang ::) lol

So yeah... he is fine :)

Oh dear :( :( :(

awwwwwwwww Basil you little cutie pie :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: That's toooo cute :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Good idea about getting them to check the back toofies love O0
So pleased to hear the little guy is basically back to his gorgeous normal self again :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

lol yeah... its great that he isnt ill :)

Ill try to post piccies of my beautiful man if I can get onto my aunties computer :D :D

so sorry you have been banned form your auntie's computer :'( :'( :'( but am so happy that little basil is feeling better. made me laugh that he piddled on you and i love the way GP's yawn. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hoping all basil's back teeth are fine. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: bunny question, with peter rabbit(cottontail?) when you have him inside do you ever hang anything on chairs? as faline the bunny loves to sniff OH's sleeves and goes round and round and round until we get dizzy watching her. but she can do this for hours. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: good luck with basil. sending hugs and cuddles to you all. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

thanks :)

We havent had peter in for a while... because of moving stuff around but no we dont... if she comes in she explores my bed or in in a C+C cage...
We let her on the lawn the other day and she tried to do a runner lol
