What's Wrong With Betty?

She's still very low , but one very sweet thing is ever since she's been ill my cat, marcus(who believes the pigs to be his brothers and sisters)has taken to sleeping ontop of her cage and keeping watch
on her throughout the night, and when she's out the cage on the floor he always lays next to her. I think he'd make a very good nurse:)

It is definitely worth asking your vet as a pig that is in pain is miserable and can display similar behaviour to what Betty is doing.

A change in antibiotic may also be something to mention too as there has not really been any improvement. See what they say about the diuretic too, ask if her chest sounds as if it is under water, if it does sound like that she will have fluid and it may be that she in fact needed a larger dose. It always sounds echoey when I listen to my pigs with the stethoscope if they have fluid (heart pigs).

Took Betty to the vets , they couldn't tell me the cause of her not eating( they're as confused as I am ) but they did put her back on the metacam , the infacol and something to keep her gut working. She's on critical care over the weekend( she had lost weight!) but she is taking the critical care really well and does seem eager to eat. If she's still not eating by herself on Monday then I have to take her back.

  1. Gaprasping at straws lol, but lm sure l recolect ceclatrobs (ceacal poos ) being one possibal remady , the are the poops that a pig puts its head between its legs to eat , apparentaty they are full of netreants , as a pig knows they are good for them , if you have other pigs , you could steal there ceclatrobs , :vom: as i say just a thought

Healing vibes for betty :luv:

Wondering if you should ask to replace the infacol with gripe water as I see as has already been mentioned that gripe water breaks down &disperses the air bubbles
Infacol collects the air to produce a big bubble.
&as in humans trapped wind can be very painful or uncomfortable at least :(
This will make her of low mood &depressed, which is often indicated by lack of eating-which then causes a downward spiral of gut problems :(

Speedy recovery betty
Xx

Thanks again for all the advice and kind words, will ask the vet about gripe water when I take Betty back, probably tomorrow or Tuesday. Sadly she's really no better, she takes her medication and the critical care really well and will eat the dark green skin off of a piece of cucumber, but I am still very worried about her.:(

i think if it were me i would take her off the infacol, this could be making things worse. give her a little tummy massage this may help disperse any trapped air

i wonder if she wants to eat but cant ,will she readily eat a small handful of grass if offered to her? (not too much as may cause bloat or diarrhea if she's not used to it)
when you go to the vets i would ask them to check Betty's front & back teeth for any problems (misaligned, damage, spurs, cracks, sharp or jagged edges, etc) that may be making it uncomfortable for her to eat if she wants to.
Also get him to look at her throat to check for oral thrush ( possibility if she also has a damp dishcloth smell to her breath) this could make it uncomfortable to eat much too.

i hope the frusimide tablets are starting to work? i had trouble to start off with when my Ellie was on them, got it all over the place in the beginning (used the dissolve in water & syringe feed method) but it was still easier than the Nelio i used for her heart meds... now that DID need a knack to getting it in with her.
is Betty sounding less chesty now?

healing vibes.

xx

No news is good news, as everyone always tells me. Hope she's okay and try not to stress too much :)

Literally just got Betty home ! Thanks for all your good wishes and support. Unfortunately the vet found nothing wrong with Betty's teeth but has taken a blood test and is awaiting the results. Betty seems abit groggy but has eaten a little bit of grass, I'm just relieved to have her back home.
