What's wrong with Big Dave?

After going to the vets yesterday (again!), whatever is going on with Big Dave is still a bit of a mystery.

He has lost weight (500g in the last 9-12 months), but his weight is now stable. His weight loss has been from his upper chest area. His abdomen is still quite rotund, but not fluidy.

He's still eating well, but without his normal enthusiasm that he previously had.

He has lost all his shine, and his colour - his fur is now very dull and dark, where as he was always super shiny and his ginger bits were quite vibrant. He's also quite dandruffy, and shedding fur more than usual.

He suddenly has very dirty ears, there's a lot of muck in them that I'm regularly cleaning out. There's no signs of mites, and he's not scratching them or anything.

Him and Boxy have little brown flecks on their fur - the microscope at work was broken, so I couldn't look at them properly, but the only thing I can think is static lice, so I'm treating them for this. Jeff and Cameo don't have this, and they've had the same hay from the same batches, so I'm not convinced it IS static lice. I've also treated them with xeno as a precaution. I've taken a hair sample to look at under the microscope when it's fixed on Tuesday.

When stroking Big Dave, you seem to suddenly (in the last day or 2) be getting black flecks all over your hands. These aren't lice. They are random shapes, random sizes (but small, not large), almost sticky flecks - they stick to your hand.

He's had a bath (as has Boxy) with lice shampoo, but the brown flecks are still there on the fur, and the black bits are still being shed, but not as much. Boxy doesn't have this strange sticky black stuff.

He's eating well, as previously mentioned. He's not drinking from the bottle, but he never does, so he's not polydipsic. The vet can feel nothing abnormal upon palpation, and he has no fluid wave indicative of abdominal fluid.

So... What's wrong with Big Dave? Where do I go from here?

The vets have pretty much said either see how he goes, monitor him for any changes, or have him in for investigation, the first step being bloods I imagine.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Amanda & Big Dave

I don't know but I do know that static lice don't normally come off in your hands, unless they are dead after the shampooing? How old is he? If he's old it could be general ageing I guess? :)

I've had him 2 years and he was a young adult when I got him so he's probably about 3, 3 & 1/2 years old. If they are static lice, it's not these that are coming off when you stroke him, it's something else

Can you feel his hip bones (are they more prominent?)... I'm sorry I can't really help you, but i'm sure your vet will, one thing does spring to mind, but it's not my place to suggest it as I'm no expert on guinea pig health, where as others here know a hell of a lot more, I recently lost a piggy to a mystery illness, and his symptoms (although he didn't have a belly like the one you've just described) were pretty similar.. Loss of weight (stable the last 6 months), still eating but not enthusiastic about it (in fact, he started turning his nose up at carrot and broccoli, his old favs towards the end) and no change in drinking habits.. I really hope you can get to the bottom of it XX

Thanks.

His hip bones are more prominant - he's lost weight all over but his abdomen is still large if that makes sense?

We're just all a bit confused! I think I probably will end up investigating further, after I've picked the brains of the top exotics vet. He will probably suggest further investigations anyway. We had all the exotics books out and everything, but couldn't find anything relevant. In the meantime, I'm just making sure he eats properly, and I'm giving him additional vit C as that can't do any harm.

Arghh! Pigs! Who'd have them!

Could he have a heart issue (enlarge heart).. could explain the fluid build up in abdomen and weight loss else where.. Just a thought, as I seem to remember the last day or so Crackers was still here, his breathing was up:(

It could be, that's something that would be looked into further if I decide to investigate. It's not fluid in his abdomen though - or at least not yet, not enough to be picked up on in an examination. His lungs are also clear, if there was fluid built up, you'd expect there to be fluid in his lungs too.

Unfortunately Amanda - without doing further investigations you are just 'guessing'.

I would opt for more test's. If there's an illness I want it found so that they can be treated. Granted with Milo I'm taking great care as the results of treating him could be fatal.

500 grams is a HUGE weight loss none of my pigs could afford to lose such an amount 'Big' Dave must have been a very big pig!

He was almost 2Kg - he's not Big Dave for nothing! The weightless has been very gradual. I'm popping into work later today so I'll be booking him in to see the senior vet on Tuesday. If he has no luck I'll be looking further afield.

Well, big Dave is off to the vets weds morning, 8.45am. I'm going to write those very expensive words on the consent form..."investigate and treat as necessary" :...

I'm thinking bloods and xrays. See if that sheds any light on the situation!

Boxy will of course be going for moral support!
