Hi, I noticed today one of my guinea pig’s back feet looks red and very dry, the side looks like there’s rough patches on it. He’s about 8 years old but hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down and it doesn’t seem to be bothering him as he was running around today without any issue. I’ll be bringing him to the vet this week but I just wanted some opinions to see if anyone knows what this might be? Thank you so much!

Hi! The good news, it is not bumblefoot, just dry skin.

Vets generally recommend to not to cream as that can make the softened foot more vulnerable to bugs getting into skin and cause a foot skin infection (bumblefoot/pododermatitis). If in doubt, please see your vet!

Older guinea pigs with less mobility and decreased circulation are more prone to foot problems. If you can, please switch to extra soft vetbed bedding in the sleeping area and change it daily. Give the bedding an extra rinse after washing.

Ok thank you so much! I’ll be sure to do that. I appreciate you replying.
