Hi all, i posted a week or so ago about my piggy Stella. She seemed really down in the dumps and went off her food. Well i took her to the vets, he had a good feel of her body, couldn't find any obvious lumps or abnormailities.

Decided to put her on a course of Baytril (0.2ml twice a day for 5 days), plus also had to syringe feed her for 1 day to kick start her body to eat again.

She gradually improved, and really did seem much better.

Finished her anti-biotics yesterday and today she has gone down hill real quick again. Just got her out of her cage and her stomach seems to have 'blown' out and she seems very swollen in that area. She looks bloated and all she wants to do is lay down and when she moves she seems to loose her balance.

I've just given her a 0.2ml dose of septrin (some i had left over from a couple of months ago), but just wondering if anyone might know what it could be?

I'm really worried so any ideas would help, thank you.

Is her tummy hard or soft? Did she start eating properly? Did the vet check her teeth? Has she been pooping?

The problem with Baytril is that it can really affect the gut which is why many vets recommend using a good probiotic like Bio-Lapis when on Baytril. I would be careful using another antibiotic while the Baytril is still in her system, especially if it's not on advice from the vet. Personally I would take her back to get checked asap.

Her stomash feels quite hard. She did start eating again after a couple of days on baytril, and did seem a lot happier. The vet checked her teeth, all fine.

Just really bizarre how she has gone down hill so quickly after coming off baytril, her stomach just looks massive, she did go a bit like this a week ago when i first noticed she wasn't well. She's really off balance too.

Any ideas what it might be so i can talk to the vet about it?

If it's hard and she's not pooping properly then it might be bloat (GI stasis) which is why it's important to get to a vet. She might need some sort of motility drugs. I'm sure someone on here (maryh?) has had experience with this more than I have, I've only ever seen minor cases.

I agree with DSL get her to a vet asap.Bloat is dangerous and there is litle you can do yourself.

please do as maryh said get her to the vet asap! 3 and a half years ago we lost the love of our life due to bloat. :'( :'( :'(her name was petal she was 5 years and 3 months and out of the blue she her stomach went hard. :'( :'( :'( after wasting 2 days trying to find a piggy savy vet, she was sedated and a tube was put down her thoart, but by this time sweet petal was so stressed so even though this got rid of the bloat poor petal had a heart attack and passed away. really hoping you get her to a vet and that she gets better really soon. i'm not 100% sure but i remember reading on here about a piggy with bloat and the owner gave it something and massaged the tummy on one side. then the next day the owner did the other side and the stomach went down. i read it shortly after i joined here, so it would be early january 2008. anyway sending you hugs and cuddles and hoping she gets better. good luck. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi

I just checked in my book and i agree vets is the best option.

but I'm just going on what the books says (go by the book)

thanks

Hi all, unfortunately my little girl passed away last night :'(

She went downhill so quickly again.

I was so, so, so upset as i have lost both of my guinea pigs within the short space of 5 weeks.

I phoned the vet today as she was booked in first thing this morn and he said he thinks she may have also had a stroke due to her imbalance and the way she was behaving.

I'm just glad she is not suffering anymore. We have buried her in the garden amongst the flowers so she can RIP.

I hope piggy heaven will take good care of her :'( :'(

Oh no poor piggy :'( R.I.P 0:) :smitten:

(((((((( BIG HUGS TO YOU ))))))))))

aww 0:) rip little one. definitely sounds like bloat to me, my pansy had this a couple of weeks ago, vets aren't very good on this on the whole. i had to treat her myself, luckily i knew what to do. so sorry for your loss, i haven't noticed this post before, otherwise i would have instructed you so sorry :'(

emma i am so sorry you lost your baby :'( :'( :'( i was really hoping that she would have made it. like you said little stella is no longer suffering and is at peace with her friend, popcorning and running free in paradise looking down on you. 0:) 0:) 0:) think of the good times and she will always be with you in spirit and in your heart. :smitten: :smitten:
sending you hugs and cuddles and again i am so so sorry for your lost. may god give you strength and comfort. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: perhaps plant a flower or tree in memory of your babies. 0:) 0:) 0:) take care hun and know we care and sending hugs your way. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

aww hun I'm so sorry... it really hurts to lose your babies, I lose a rabbit and a piggy within 3 days of eachother :'(

RIP lil piggy... you'll be deeply missed :'(

massive hugs! :'( :smitten: :smitten: she's in a place where she won't be in any pain of suffering :smitten:

Thank you all so much for your kind words, i'm sitting here now crying! (again)!

I really do feel lost without them both as they were very talkative and always sqeaked & squealed when i opened the fridge door and went near the food. The utility room is just so, so quiet without them and the hutch looks so bare. :'(

I think to lose one is bad enough but now both my babies have gone i'm at a loss. They were both only 3, just can't beleive i've lost them both within such a short space of time to different illnesses.

I still have my new baby girl (treacle, who i got to keep Stella company), and we are going to get her a new friend in time. She looks quite lonely though so is getting lots of extra cuddles! :smitten:

we really feel for you as we know what you're going through, in 1999 we lost 2 piggies with in 2 weeks both were only around 8 months of age. and in 2006 we lost both our dogs 5 days apart. so glad you have treacle to cuddle and to love. perhaps put a teddy or a stuffed sock in with treacle to give her something to cuddle up too. sending you hugs and cuddles and pray god gives you strength and comfort. know your babies are at peace and popcorning around in paradise. think of the good times and they will always be with you. you are entitled to cry, we lost petal to bloat and that was 4 years ago this august and it still hurts and brings tears to our eyes. :'( :'( :'( you take care and give yourself time to grieve your loses. thinking of you. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

it's so hard to loose a piggie, they're not just a pet, but a friend, a baby, and they mean so much. :'(
when they first go that gap in your heart feels huge, but as hard as it is now hun, it will heal, but you'll always remember your babies at the bridge, i know i do. (i'm crying now! ::) ) Try to look forward to getting your sweetie and new friend and know that your pigs at the bridge were loved and cared for so much and they had a bril life here :smitten: :smitten:
((hugs)) i really do feel for you :smitten:

luckily, i noticed before she was too bad :) well i followed instructions from peter gurneys website O0 i crushed 1 rennie with some water and syringed it, then crushed a buscopan and mixed with water and syringed, left for half an hour then gave her tummy a good old massage. i've also used olive oil successfully. 1 teaspoon syringed then massaged again O0
