I adopted a Black Self pig roughly 2 months ago she is now 6 months.I registered at my other GP'S vet and got a clean bill of health. I round/ring worm my girls every 6 weeks, they live indoors in a large clean area and are well fed with the proper fresh veg, hay and pellets. Last month I noticed a small white dot appeared above her nose I never thought much but kept an eye on it. 2 weeks later the dot became a white line 3mm in size. We went to the vet and she done skin tests all were normal healthy cells but prescribed Itrafungol 0.5mg for a week using a syringe in diluted fresh juice. I have done this for a week took a week off as directed and I have too keep doing this till it goes away? any ideas?

Sounds like a fungal nose strip to me, caused by an overgrowth of Candida as when they duck down to eat their special poos they keep reinfecting themselves. Itrafungol is a good move though a step I may have opted for further down the line but it won't hurt to be on it already. Is the dose 0.5ml once or twice a day? Is it a week on, week off for 3 rounds? My pigs have been on Itrafungol and were on 0.5ml twice a day for 3 rounds with a week off in between. This was confirmed as the correct dose to use with the company who make it by the vet and Guinea Pig Health and Welfare specialist I volunteered at a guinea pig clinic with.

I don't agree with putting it in juice, the Itrafungol tastes of caramel so she should take it ok without the juice.

When mine have had fungal nose strips we have removed the infected hair with tweazers and applied Canesten with a cotton bud twice a day.

Thanks Helen for answering, She gets it once a day for a week, a week off then to get it again and was told to keep going till it disappeared. I was told baby food by the vet but struggled to find something 100% veg so took it in myself to use cranberry juice to fill up the 1ml syringe. To be honest she would lick it up without the juice. It is a scab of dry white skin no scabs. I had read in other places to use canesten but got mixed reserves. Vet bills isn't a concern of mine I just want the best for my girls.

I usually would not recommend Canesten as creams can make fungal conditions worse as the skin can heat up but nose strips are the one thing I use it on. I would just carry on with the Itrafungol for now. If it returns speak to your vet about the higher dose as it has got my pigs through a systemic mycosis situation and into remission at the higher dose. You can also use Povidine Iodine on the strip instead of Canesten.
