Whats Your Absorbent Layer?

Just wondering what do you guys use as an absorbent layer for your fleece bedding?

I currently used old towels and furniture covers, it absorbs very well but i think it gets smelly quickly. and washing those long thick furniture blankets, towels and fleece is becoming a hassle since i live in NYC and we have to go out to do laundry.

Ive been thinking of ordering some uhaul pads, has anybody used it?
 
I have just made my own cage liners and I used fleece on top, towel for the middle absorbent layer and then fleece at the bottom. They are working very well, no smell and cheaper than what I was originally using which was fleece on top of puppy pads.
 
zorb,towelling,u haul.are all layers used in my liners.the best for absorbency and quick drying in my personal opinion is zorb !
 
i didnt think of zorb but i just looked it up and it seems to be pretty good. Do you think that if i get someone to do liners for me, putting a layer of fleece, middle layer zorb and bottom layer fleece would work well?

That's how my liners are and they worked great
 
newspapers and leaflets from supermarkets. No cost and amazing job! no smell at all.
The old towels are put underneath the layer of paper only for making a more comfortable floor for the piggies, but the only part which can have some wet spots is the one with the leaflets and I remove only these wet spots every day.
About the laundry, you might use several pieces of fleece, so that you can wash them all together. I wash the linen of fleece once/twice a week but it does not smell... (mine is a simple piece of fleece fabric)
 
Fleece zorb fleece are the best of all imo

Fleece mattress tipper fleece are good

Fleece washable incontinance pad fleece are good but quite bulky
 
Thanks everyone, I'm going to give the newspaper a try tonight and see, if not ill go with the fleece zorb fleece combination
 
remember to remove the wet spots and if possible hang out the fleece for some cool air (during your piggies floor time).
I prefer leaflets because it is easier to remove the few wet ones. Maybe these pictures will help you

once a day you remove the fleece with all the poo and leftovers. The fleece should remain dry, but some cool air outside will remove the smell...
 
got it, awesome! thanks a lot. would hand washing the fleece be a good idea? what do you guys think?
 
washing machine is more practical and after the spinning the fleece comes out dry. But of course you can do it by hand and considering that the fleece is never dirty you can simply put it into a basin with very warm water and detergent for one hour. No softner of course.

(today I was busy and I did not clean the cage, the newspapers underneath are still wet, but there is no smell here in the living room)
 
I machine wash mine at 60c. It's still had urine pass through it and piggy poo on it so I feel it needs a good wash.
 
I use Vetfleece with a layer of newspaper underneath. I change the paper every day and the fleece every other day. The Vetfleece allows pee to soak through to the paper while leaving piggies lovely and dry. Been using some of my fleece constantly for at least 2-3 years and it still works well.
 
Instead of regular fleece, you are using Vetfleece? i havent heard of vetfleece! i should look it up.

I want to try washing my fleece by hands because i wash them in the machine but the smell still stays in it. i use detergent and vinegar to wash them but the urine smell does not go away
 
I suppose it depends on how many piggies you have whether it'll be practical to try washing by hand. I've 14 piggies so always have lots of washing! I'm lucky to have a separate washing machine just for animal laundry.
 
14? i cant even imagine taking care of 14 piggies! lol thats awesome tough. I have only 3

I've never used fleece before, but am considering trying it. How would you do the fleece/zorb/fleece option? All sewed together and one layer of each? Does it need to be special or treated fleece?
 
I was using carefresh for a while and i switched to fleece a few months ago and its so much cheaper and easier. I think it can be a little pricey to start because you have to buy the fleece and absorbent layer etc.. but once you start is pretty cheap to maintain.

This is what i did. I got some cheap fleece from the convenience store they were like $8 each. 100 % polyester . I washed them about 3 times with regular detergent (no fragrance or fabric softener added) get one that says "original" in the front of the battle, of any brand of your preference. I washed my fleece 3 times and they were good to go. every time i would wash them i would pore a bit of water on the fleece to see if it will go through and the first two times it didnt but the 3rd time it did so i knew it was ready. I use towers and furniture covers blankets underneath the fleece as an absorbent layer.

Now if you want to skip these whole process you can just go ahead and order some fleece liners from an online store. Etsy has a lot of them very cool pattern etc... but they can be pretty pricey, at least for me. But if you have the money, hey go for it! Some come ready to be used right away and they come with an absorbent layer between two layers of fleece.
 
Thank you for the helpful pointers! So for DIY fleece - any fleece will do, but needs to be washed in normal detergent, without fabric softener a few times until the water goes through it - right, think I've got that! Do you just layer it all or do you sew it together?
 
I use fabric pee pads that are actually made for humans (they can handle alot of pee!) They are fairly large and go into the wash with their fleece when I clean the cage. :tu:
 
that is correct, i just layer it. I do a a few towels and furniture fabric for absorbency and then i just put the fleece over it and clip the fleece to the cage with metal clips. Because my piggies like to go under the fleece. Look for fleece that says 100% polyester anti-pill fleece. You can also buy fabric online for cheap. go to http://www.joann.com tons of cool fabrics!
