Hi so one of my guinea pigs is a lot more vocal than the other in that he wheeks a lot more and other sounds. But he seems to quiet down when the other is laying with him on me. Is this normal? And is there usually a more reserved guinea pig and what does it mean?

Guinea pigs are roaming group animals that stay in contact with their mates by chuntering whenever on the move as a constant update where they are and that they are OK. If they lose sight, then they will wheek louder in order to re-establish contact, especially when they are still babies or vulnerable recently weaned youngsters that are desperate not get lost. ;)
Once his mate is with him, he is not 'lost' anymore...

Guinea Pig Facts - A Short Overview

Like with humans, you get chatterboxes and you get the silent types. :D

Yeah one of mine has a much louder voice. If I get the other one out on her own, the loud one wheeks like mad until they are together again.

Thank you! I thought this was the case but couldn’t remember. They’re pretty young and one is less freaked out when alone and when I got them they were together already, so it makes sense.

Yeah the same happens with me. When I get the louder one out the other seems to be more okay about it but if I take the other one out he seems to roam and see if he’s still around or if he’s been “snatched”.

Out of the 5 of mine, timid little Meg hates being on her own. So when I put them in the run or back in the hutch or its cuddle time, I have to remember not to leave her til last or get her out first then she doesn't sound like she's being murdered!

I only have the 2 so she's always first or last - I dread to think what the neighbours think I'm doing to the poor girl. I mean she even does it if she's downstairs in the hutch & wants Clover to come down too!

The first week we had Theo he wheeked every time we left the room and human daddy had to sleep in Theo's room during quarantine so he knew we hadnt abandoned him! Now he wheeks if he cant see Piggle and Puggle. Puggle has never wheeked once but she does constantly chatter and coo to the other piggies. I love listening to the piggy conversations that go on all the time, I've no idea what they are talking to each other about but they have a lot to say!

My lot chunter away to each other constantly. I know when one of them doesn't like what the other one has said as the wheak changes and it sounds like a reprimand!
