Hi! So things have been going really good, until I noticed some things yesterday night. My piggie was wheeking while peeing. Later that night, she also made a very dark, whiny noise almost as if she was pain (can not confirm if she was urinating or not while she did it), and today she made that noise again (she was not urinating). She isn't wheeking the entire time she pees, more so towards the end of her urination she starts to wheek in pain. these are the same types of wheeks she had when she had a UTI, but back then she was urinating blood. She used to wheek when she peed out of habit, she just didn't like it when people watched her pee, it was normal. But that hasn't happened for so long which is why I am concerned. She isn't peeing blood or struggling to poop. And today as far as I know she has peed a few times, a lot actually, without squeaking. I know it's impossible to get a vet's advice without a vet, so I just had a few questions to ask on here. I am going to continue keeping an eye out over the next few days, based on the things I have described, how worried should I be about this being bladder stones? I know UTIs are very curable, but bladder stones, especially for any guinea above age 3 basically, are pretty much uncurable. I know bladder stones are rare and share similar symptoms to UTIs, so I was just wondering if there are any symptoms separating the two that I should look out for? Thanks, I shall keep a close eye out. Merry Christmas!

Please don’t worry or jump to any conclusions about it being something incurable. I would get her seen by a vet now given you have noticed symptoms rather than wait for a few days before even making an appointment. If she has started with a uti then getting her started on antibiotics and pain killers sooner rather than later would benefit her

Please do not jump straight to bladder stones as an idea, I know you get anxious about illness but you need to enjoy your piggies as well and not always jump to the worst possible case scenarios. Blood can be present in urine without being visible, same with humans. If you know she is squeaking in pain then popping to the vets is definitely the best course of action

The vets are closed today and tomorrow, so we have to wait two full days/nights to take her to the vet but my poor baby is starting to wheek very loudly whenever she pees now. Yesterday and today she managed to have a lot of pees without any wheeking, and every once in a while it would happen but only rarely. Today it was a bit more frequent, and as it gets later, it gets worse. I heard her wheeking in pain quite loudly two times (two wheeks), and when I came over to her, she began to pee in which she did those loud painful sqeaks louder. I a just really worried. She is acting fine still. We are going to wait till thursday but is there anything I could do meanwhile? We have metacam but we have had it well over four-five months and I doubt it is still good to consume. Should I change anything in the diet right now? What cab I do?

Start filtering water with a brita filter jug, lower the calcium in the diet a bit, leave our any kale, Parsley, spinach, stick to things like bell peppers red or green, coriandor, cucumber. You could be dealing with a uti, or bladder stones, hopefully the first one. If the metacam is in date you can still use it after giving it a good shake, but you'll need to know a dosage which the vet will have to weigh you're guinea pig to do, I dare not advise you on this incase its an overdose.

I can’t get a brita filter jug, I have not been feeding those things anyways so that’s good I guess. The meta can label from the vets says it expires in 2021, but we literally got it 7 months ago, do you think it’s fine to give? I’ll stick to pepper and cucumber. The calcium deposits she’s peeing are now light pink, and the squeaking is getting a lot worse. I have attached a video and image of the pee. Also, she’s only gained weight since the meta cam has been prescribed so no worries about an overdose. She’s had a uti once before a few months back, so I’m praying that’s all it is.

Please remember when you post that it's middle of the night for most of the forum and we are all fast asleep. Metacam lasts for 6 months so if it was prescribed in the last 6 months then I would give some just to tide her over until you can get her to the vets.

What does she weigh? Have u got a dose? It won't do any harm, just give it a good shake so that it might work. Get to a vet when you can, a 24 hour on eshouls be open on Christmas, I've had to do an emergency vet visit over Christmas day and the rest of the week a few years ago

Her wee is like a paste, keep her fluids up but don't over do it, too much water can be bad I've heard. How many pellets have you been feeding and what pellets?

My bad!

I do not have her exact weight but I do know that she is definitely heavier than how she was seven months ago, since most of the time when we go to the vets they always say she has gained a little more weight. I gave her metacam today, on the package it says it expires on Feb. 2021 but I doubt it, it is a day or two from exactly seven months from the day we got it. I shook it a lot. I was originally going to wait but today she is just in so much pain when peeing and she continues wheeking in pain even a bit after she is done peeing now (sometimes). There is no visible blood atm. So far I have seen her kind of arch her back in pain while peeing (she also seemed to do it while pooping, although I am not sure) once. Tomorrow we are taking her to the vets, why do these things have to happen at the worst times? I am feeding mainly peppers right now, alongside a bit of cucumber but nothing else since I need the calcium intake to be at a minimum. Is it okay to feed her some critical care since she likes the taste, or should I stop that as well?

It's fine to feed the critical care but the metacam is no good. The expiry date is for if the bottle is unopened. Once opened it only has a shelf life of 6 months as I said in my last post

My gosh! Do you think it’ll be okay? I’m not home right now, but I won’t give any more till tomorrow when we get a new one. Do you think she will be fine?

I read the meloxicam when expired is not harmful, just useless basically. Although this confuses me, cause I have gotten back home and she is peeing perfectly again, no squeaking at all. So it must have worked, right? She is doing great. I am glad we are finally able to take her to the vets tomorrow.

Basically it will be less effective not harmful. Hope the vets trip goes well

Unless she has passed a bladder stone, it could just be that the painkiller worker, see what the vet has to say 👍

Update! They did an ultra sound at the vets today and found no stones, I am so grateful! Our amazing vet even decided to be nice and charge us nothing for the ultrasound. They have given us septra and benebac along with a new metacam. .3ml of metacam every 12 hours, same for the bactrim. And ofc the benebac two hours after the septra. I can not tell you how relieved and grateful I am! Thanks to the both of you for helping out, you helped a lot actually. God bless!

That's great news, do they think she has anything else wrong like an infection maybe? Uti?
