Wheeking?

Hello all

I've always thought that wheeking was a noise piggies use to communicate with humans, I was putting my piggies back in their cage after floor time and Luna was being a pain to catch so I sat down for 5 mins, during this time trixie was moving around in the cage and Luna must have hear and started really wheeking! Does anyone know why? Was she missing her sister?

My pigs do this to "remind" me that I haven't put them back in their cage yet. Even if it is because they keep running away. :-)

Guinea pigs wheek to stay in contact; they are group animals. They have evolved living and moving along paths in dense South American grass lands. In order to keep in contact and make sure that all is ok, they have a range of sounds. Loud wheeking means that a youngster is lost and is calling for its mates to re-establish contact. Communication ans social interaction in guinea pigs is actually much more differentiated than previously expected as recent reasearch is showing.
