Hi guys.
My girlie Senna (approx 5.5years) has been wheezing for about 2 weeks now. We had a week of baytril with no improvement, then a steroid injection - also no improvement.
There is no discharge, coughing or sneezing, and eating etc is normal.
She is a little lethargic but still pretty much okay. Still moving about alright.
She's going in for x Ray tomorrow. Hopefully conscious but if not then will take blood while she's under.

Just looking for suggestions and experiences.
She's on vet bed, hay isn't dusty and her cage mate is fine.

My piggie is just like this at the moment. :( I think it's just old age, she's about 5 months older than Senna so I wouldn't be surprised if they had a similar condition. Just saw the vet about her today and got some antibiotics for her but there was nothing obviously wrong with her apart from the weaker legs and breathing. I would just give Senna a load of attention if she benefits from it, and treat her a little. If she seems to be really struggling with breathing maybe just leave her alone, or if she's more content when she's with you then by all means keep her company. After experiencing this with 2 piggies all I can say is hope, as there usually isn't much you can do since piggies hide their symptoms and it is sometimes too late. All the best of luck, I really hope she pulls through this! Kisses and hugs to her. x

Does it seem more from the nose or her chest? is the sound a hoot at all? like a duck? It's good that she is having an xray as that way the vet will be able to rule out any possible heart issues as they should be able to see if the heart is enlarged or if there is any fluid.

Her chest is very noisy, not just her nose unfortunately. I'm just trying to keep her happy at the moment but if we can't ease her breathing soon then I will have to let her go. It must be dreadfully uncomfortable.

I was hoping for it to be an infection but it doesn't seem like it with the lack of coughing, sneezing and discharge

Hi just a thought, a H.E.P.A air fillter!
I have a sow that has a cronic breathing problem,
Though since l intraduced a hepa air filter into my pig
Room , she has not made a peep,

If your pig is indoors, then it might be worth a while triying one

I know I say this a lot on here but it is possible she has some fluid which could be cleared by the vet giving her a diuretic. Does she have any of the following symptoms?

Lethargy
Difficult to rouse from sleep
Hooting followed by a cough
Blue tinge to extremities like the ears and nose
Failure to gain weight

She is slightly lethargic but nothing major. None of the other symptoms! Weight is steady.

Thanks Gizzy, I'll have a look at that depending on x Ray results!

I hope it works for her, but best not putting you eggs all in one bascet as so to speak
You would be wise to look at the synptoms helen105281 has mentioned :tu:

Hi I hope things are improving for you and your piggy. I have just come back from the vets with Yogi as she had started to breathe pretty heavy again and she had been on antibiotics for 2 weeks for a URI. The vet weighed her and she had lost weight and he felt around her abdoman and found an ovarian cyst, so I will have to decide on whether she should have an operation or hormone injection. Tough decision to make as my head is mashed!

Anyway, what I'm saying is maybe take your piggie to an exotic vet to rule this out. Our vet said the URI had been brought on my stress and pain of the cyst. Please let me know how you get on.

Hi , glad there is an improvement,
My Bella hasent made a peep since l swiched on the hepa filter,
My only problem now is were to get the replacement fillter catrages, it is old
And l dont know if they even make them now :hmm:
Though the new catrages last 6 mounths so l have a while before a new one is needed

Thank you, I'm glad Bella is showing some signs of improvement also. Haha it sounds like you have a little diva on your hands.

Hi guys. Finally got an appointment with Alistair Lawrie and he thinks it's her heart. Given frusol and fortekor (to start in a few days after some of the fluid has hopefully cleared).
Fingers crossed my wee girl improves! I reckon she's turning 6 at the end of this year so any quality time we can get from her is a blessing considering where she came from.

Glad you have got the meds, do you know what dose of Fortekor she is on?

Roughly 0.4mg once daily I think. And 3.6mg frusol twice daily for a couple of days and then reduce a bit.

I trust this vet. Not sure if he's on the vet listings but he's who everyone calls for exotics, including when the vet school are stumped. Just had to wait a couple of weeks to get an appointment with him as he's semi retired now.

My girlie is already making more noise. She still can't wheek but her wheezing has gone louder again. I know that sounds weird but she had gone quieter which I'm assuming was because she couldn't get enough air in to even make the wheezing noise that loudly. So hopefully it's working already

The Fortekor dose is very low but is most likely an introductory dose. There is scope to go higher if she doesn't appear to be responding as well as you hoped. As a guide my heart pigs are on a minimum dose of 1.25mg a day and this is split in 2 to take into account their fast metabolism.

Great that she seems livelier though.

One of our pigs has just had surgery for an ovarian cyst, her symptoms were different as she was just really horny and strutting all over the place. Our exotics vet recommended a full spay, was such a hard decision but went with her advice. The vet called me after the op to tell me it turned out to be the biggest cyst she had ever seen! That was on Monday, and she has recovered amazingly well - eating, drinking and pooping normally, and last night she got so excited by having her hay changed she jumped into the manger (which is mounted on the hutch wall so was a heck of a jump - naughty piggy!) All cases are different I know, but I just wanted to let you know Crumble's story so that if you opt for surgery it might reassure you a bit :-)
