My daughters guinea pig recently had 4 babies, they are now just over a week old, yesterday she started wheezing, since having the babies they have caused a great deal of strain on her body and at the moment, despite us feeding her regularly she is looking a little poorly and sort of ill looking, then yesterday she started wheezing, she doesn't look well to me, what should I do? I know the babies are putting a great strain on her body, the babies are healthy and her other older baby (almost 3mnths) is very healthy. What could of caused this?

I would take her to the vets as wheezing is a sign of a uri. Just to let you know, Breeding is against the rules of the forum. I will tag a experienced member to offer any advice. @helen105281

Hi welcome to the forum. It does sound like a possible URI to me so please get her to the vets as soon as you can (preferably before the Easter break). Is her breathing laboured at all?

Out of interest what do you bed them on? There is a slight chance it could be allergy related but I am more inclined to think URI as if she is feeling run down aftergiving birth then she would be more susceptible to catching something. Does she seem snotty at all? If so, the vet could give you Bisolvon which would help with any mucous.

When you go to the vets, please ask them to listen to her chest as even though this seems upper respiratory there is a chance she could still have fluid in which case she would need a diuretic such as Furomsemide.

Please could you let us know where you are? have you checked out the recommended vets locator?

Finally, have you noticed any similar symptoms in the babies?

The babies are all fine, they aren't sick at all, mum is run down after having 4 in one litter. We have now seperated mum from Dad, no more babies. We are in Australia. The pet shop guy said we could use cat litter as it soaks up the urine and helps with the odour. Newspaper is no good. I am thinking of getting them onto wood shavings? The babies go in 5 weeks, they arev eating lettuce and chaff already and drinking from the water bottle, they also love apple.

I wouldn't use woodshavings (though lots of members do) as it can effect their breathing. Do you have anything like Carefresh in Australia? The ideal bedding in my eyes is vetbed as it wicks moisture away onto the newspaper you place underneath and is good if they have allergies.

What is carefresh made of? Also what is vetbed made of, I haven't heard of these in Australia. When had guinea pigs as a little girl I had them in an old chook pen, massive house, no need for bedding, lots of pipes for them to run thru and hide, I used too pick grass for them and they used to hide under this.

No these guinea pigs are spoiled and are inside. My guinea pigs when I was little were in the chook pen, it was massive they loved it.

She looks ill to and she is so poor, weight wise, I can feel her back bone, despite us keeping the food up to her, to help her out. She is eating and drinking as normal, just not gaining any weight. She has a healthy appetite.

Welcome to the forum. Helen has given some great advice, she is very knowledgeable so i cant add anything. I will say i agree with Helen, it sounds like she needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Hope she is ok. x

I just pulled up some fresh grass for them all and she is chowing down on it, she loves her fresh grass. My Avatar is of my Bandy, my gorgeous boy, he was eating the grass out of my daughters hands, he loves the sweet grass also, n the babies a week and a bit old are chowing down, they love it also. She has a good appetite, especially for the fresh, sweet grass.

Yes she loves her grass, she's now got a grass beard lol, all down her chin is green lol. Yes Bandy is my bubby boy, He looked like a bandicoot at birth (all ears) hence the name Bandy, I also loved his colour, gorgeous silver/grey. He has gotten so big now and only not quiet 3mnths old.

I'm so sorry, did she see the vet? was it a URI? It could have been pneumonia it can develop and kill very quickly. Night night little Kiss. Hope her babies are ok?

Yeah the vet said it was pneumonia she gave us antibiotics the vet said she was healthy but before she died she was skin and bones. the babies are fine but calling for mumma i walked in and saw her lying there the babies were nudging her trying to wake her up my eldest daughter buried her this morning she was devastated. For the babies can we give them kitten milk if not what milk do we give them because they are not weened completely.

And seeing your profile picture reminds me of her it looks just like her.

That was my Maddie, I lost her a few weeks ago too.

I am tagging @Wiebke as she knows about rearing babies, I have no idea myself. She is away at the moment but is checking on all pregnancy threads but have tagged her as she wouldn't necessarily see this otherwise until she is home.

Okay thank you Maddie looks so cute it's like her and kiss were twins. Do you know when she will be home

Sorry for the loss of Kiss. Will try and find someone of experience to help as Wiebke is away at moment
