Hi guys, hope you are keeping well.
I just wanted another opinion on my piggy's current issue.
I noticed Butternut wheezing on and off a couple of weeks ago, no runny nose or eyes, still eating and drinking, otherwise seemed normal. I took him to an emergency vet the next day as he looked hunched up and sad. The vet wasn't an exotics specialist but he prescribed a week of baytril and meloxaid for possible pneumonia. Typically, Butternut had perked up as soon as I rang to make the vets appointment and continued to look well and stopped wheezing after a couple of days of meds (I ran the full week's course, don't worry). Then yesterday I heard occasional wheezing but in the night saw him struggling to poo and producing small soft poos so I took him straight to the emergency vet. It was the same vet as before, and he couldn't hear any wheezing or see any signs of Butternut being unhealthy, but he did give me some ranitidine to give twice a day. I just happened to see a post that said ranitidine was recalled last year, does that mean I shouldn't be giving this?

My main question is: should I persist with my current vet and ask them to refer me to a specialist? He offered to do an x Ray but I wouldn't be confident in him being able to interpret this. Today Butternut seems himself, eating and pooing normally but almost constant wheezing now.

P. S. His weight has fluctuated slightly 50 grams either way the past 3 weeks so not too concerning?

I’d say that if you aren’t confident in the vet or have doubts in anyway, then getting another opinion is absolutely the right thing to do.

If his weight is fluctuating up and down by that amount during normal weekly weight ins it wouldn’t be overly concerning - you will get fluctuations due to full/empty bladder/tummy. If there are considerable drops in weight or if the general trend is downwards, then that is a different matter

Thanks for your reply. I'll try and find an exotics vet but has been very difficult so far due to covid meaning a lot of practices are closed/reduced opening plus I'm new to this area anyway!

Any thoughts on the ranitidine? Not sure if it's safe to use after seeing the note about it being recalled
