We recently got a new addition to our guinea pig family. Marsie is suppose to be 8weeks but she is very tiny and we assume under weight (244g) she is very active and follows the other two ladies around, she is eating, pooing, peeing and drinking. She has started to wheeze when she squeak's, little bit worried as this has just happened over night, they currently have wood shavings then hay on top for their bedding. Any ideas of what it could be would be great. Thanks

My first thought would be to ditch the wood shavings, as these are known to cause respiratory problems in some piggies. Does she wheeze any other time other than when she is squeaking? Are there any other signs of a URI (coughing sneezing runny nose?) I would be inclined to see a vet just for a general checkup. My pigs have done this in the past when they have been under the weather.

hi, it could be that the bedding is too dusty. you could try another type of litter or put newspaper over the shavings with soft barley straw over the top & give a big ball of hay to eat each day. hay racks are good as it keeps it clean & nice to eat. I bag my hay & give it a good shake before feeding. Keep a close eye on baby as it could be the start of a respiratory infection that will need vet treatment. I would get her checked out asap to be on the safe side.

She only wheezes when she squeaks, thanks for the reply guys. Got her a wee vet check this afternoon n already looking at changing her bedding, there seems to be no other signs apart from the wheezing. Think I'll b ditching the wood shavings to see if that helps
