Hi guys, one of my male guinea pig is wheezy now and again, I think I know which one it is, it seems to be mainly on a night, unless I'm just noticing it more then because the house is quiet, should I be concerned? The internet says is could be a sign of a problem with his respiratory system, does anybody know if this is true and we need to take him to the vet? Also, one of our Female guinea pigs (the mother of 3) has a bald patch on her back, it is a perfect round circle with no scabs or anything, does anyone know what this is? could it be mange, their is none anywhere else and she has no dry skin or scabs anywhere. thanks

@Victoria Watson I'd definitely take him to the vet. It's better to be safe than sorry. If it is a respiratory issues he'll need some medication.

Your girl will need to see the vet too. It could be mites as they don't always leave scabs or sore patches.

Thank you, we have just lost a piggie a few month ago due to mites, he became so ill.
The other 4 have just overcome mites but it could be possible that some still remain. I have a 25 week old rabbit too and I'd hate her to get anything off them.

How old is your male piggie? One of my boars, Boris, gets wheezy sometimes because of his age (9 years old in February)

I have and have had several older guinea pigs with narrowinng airways that would get wheezy especially in dry indoors air. Try placing a bowl of steaming water by his cage in the evenings and renew it before you go to bed.

If it gets worse, you may want to consider a nebuliser.

9 years is a very good age! I hope that my Calli lives to see her 9th birthday in early summer!
