Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone has any advice. I have two boars, approx 1.5 years old. About a month ago, I was feeding them breakfast and cleaning their cage, and Bumble sounded very snotty and wheezy! I know this can be a sign of a URI so rang the vet and got an appointment at 5pm. 5pm comes, Bumble's snotty / wheezy sounds have gone but still went along to the vet. He checked them both out and said their chests sounded clear, but would prescribe a course of antibiotics administered orally. We did this over 5 days as stated, but on the 4th day, our other boy Mojo sounded the same. We called the vets again and they said, since they had given us extra anyway, we could administer the antibiotics to Mojo as we had Bumble. Both pigs seemed fine, eating, drinking, popcorning around etc and things have been fine since then.

However, again this morning I woke up and Bumble sounds very snotty and wheezy again (Mojo fine). Still normal self, eating, drinking as normal. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm reluctant to think it was a URI given the vet said they sounded ok, and it had cleared itself up / stopped sounding over a few hours. He's a bit of a chubby pig, not over weight just a lot bigger than his cage mate (despite being the most submissive haha!), so not sure this could be a problem?

I'm such a worrier and they are my babies, so just really worried there is something more seriously wrong with him.

Thanks for all advice in advance!

It could be allergies, what are they bedded on? what type of hay do they have? are there any air fresheners nearby?

I would get a vet check in case though just to rule out URI again. Ask them to check his chest too, and if he has mucous in his nasal passages there is a medication called Bisolvon which is good for clearing it.

No air freshers, we have an incense burner in the room they are in but never burn anything when they are in the house. Will remove from the room incase any dust is blowing about, as I've never really thought about it to be honest.

They are housed in a cage inside, lined with fleece washed weekly at 90 degrees with non bio washing power. They have a homemade 'castle' my partner made :D from wood which is lined with newspaper and changed daily, which is in there indoor area. This is stuffed with hay and they take it in turns to sleep in there and in other random furry tunnels or comfy spots around the cage.

Since the weather has been nice they have been having outdoor time, and i've just checked on them after being outside for 30 mins and i picked him up and he sounded fine again!

I'll move the incense burner and give the vets a call to see if they can advise. Just so strange how it starts and stops so frequently!

Thanks for the advice Helen!
