Hi all,
We brought my daughter 2 boar pigs about 18mths ago since spring one of our boys has started getting wheezy. After many trips to the vets, it has been decided he has an allergy to something. The boys are kept indoors and we have so far tried wood chippings, recycled paper, and hay for bedding but nothing has helped as yet, the wheezing continues to come and go, he will wheeze for a while til he sneezes then will be fine for a while, sometimes days and weeks other times just minutes. There doesn't seem to be any pattern at all. We have also changed the hay we feed them to see if that made a difference but it hasn't.
it is just the one that is suffering and they are both happy and eating well and not losing any weight so we aren't concerned on that side of things, but would like any advice you can offer to help our boy .

Hi! It rather sounds like an allergy or sensitivity. Have you also looks at air fresheners, perfumed skin products, dust-extracted hay, fleece bedding?

Can you try whether a bowl of steaming water next to the ages eases the breathing?

My guinea pig, Kyper, was sneezing like that but he got over it. I would not recommend wood chip bedding as I have heard it can cause respiratory issues. I use paper bedding but have also used fleece in the past, which might be better based on the allergy problem. Maybe try switching hay brands because that seemed to be what caused some of Kyper's sneezing. Hope he gets better!

It does sound as though he may simply be allergic to something. Have you ever considered fleece bedding? Are you using anything with a strong fragrance in the area, like air freshener, plug-in oils, carpet shampoos, etc?

My Tabitha tends to wheeze. A heart issue has been ruled out and the vet thinks she has a slightly narrowed airway so has suggested we take her in the bathroom after a shower and ultimately invest in a nebuliser. Wiebke's suggestion of a steaming bowl of water would help.

Has your vet ruled out a heart issue as it can be one of the symptoms of that, though there are usually others symptoms too.

Thanks everyone, vets said his heart was fine. We don't use any strong perfumes or air fresheners as the kids have allergies to various things. I've not tried fleece but will give it a go and will try the steam too.

Just want to say thank you for all the advice. I've changed the bedding to vetbed and the wheezing has stopped for now at least. Wish I knew about this earlier, it's so much easier to clean and the boys love it.
