do they tend to not eat as much?

As you know Duke has been ill, well i'm wondering if by me trying to shove soo much food into him that it's not the right thing to do. I really need some advice from you all that have older piggies.

Do as they get older reduce food intake?
What else should i look out for?

Thanks for listening once again :smitten:

Hey Glynis :)

I dont really have 'older piggies' but Peter Rabbit is really old and just shovels food down her throat... she is always eating ;D

Hope Duke is feeling better :)

to be honest it depends on the pig take carrie annes biscuit for instance he is always eating non stop yet is a bony little monkey he is getting on a bit nearly 5 , yet jinx eats as normal and dipstick the eldest you rarely see eat but hes in great shape, so depends on the pig, I do find as a general rule as they get older they often get bonier ,

I have found that with my 5 1/2 year old Pookie, that he doesn't tend to eat as much as he did, he seems to know when he's full and just walks away from his plate!

whereas my 6mth & 7mth old eat everything in sight and my 9 week old tries to eat the bowl too! 98)

i have 2 older sows they are both 5 1/2 and they eat for england! both of them launch into their supper to get all the good stuff! lol i agree that they tend to go boney..although morgan and lois arent really showing any signs of old age, they are still fat little things, run around, sleep, and act just like my younger ones occasionally we get a little popcorning too! lol

:) :) :) I have had loads of older boys. Yes they do slow up on eating, but drink more which is a sign that their kidneys are packing up. I always take them to the vet just to check that they don`t have any teeth trouble and everything else is OK. If everything checks out, then I make up what they are not eating with some complan if they will take it. If not then just leave alone and they will slowly wind down....... :-\ :-\ :-\

sround same age as my girlies i estimates them to be born in feb, i got them from a pet shop so didnt know their exact birth dates

My Snug defintely ate less and slowed down generally towards the end of his life (he died last year aged 4)

Sam (now 5) can eat for England though! and is far less fussy than the three younger boys ;D

awwwww they're all sooo different eh ::) ::) ::) ::)

Now he's eating well for OZ (cause that's where we live :) ) LOL he's decided the past day or so, that food is interesting, oooo i can hope O0 O0

Glad he's found an interest in food again Glynis, that's good news O0 :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-* for Duke

whilst on the subject of age has anyones piggies hair colour changed?

Shiraz is brown all over but now has greyish/silver hairs around her mouth n nose..

She is only 1 years old!

My piggy Bella who is 4 years old love her food still, she eats and eats....she is always the first to squeak for a treat if she feels the need as well!

She is my heaviest pig out of all four of them (even heavier than the boys!).
