Tewdric
Teenage Guinea Pig
Long story – but I decided that in order to stop Brunel pining after the loss of his friend Telford due tumours that he needed to be neutered. We had tried boar dating at our nearest rescue – but they said that he’d need to find a very laid back piggie to attempt to pair him with after he picked a fight with five different options at his boar dating sessions. It could be a long while before a laid back guy gets handed into the rescue and Brunel has lost his ‘bounce’ and is clearly in need of company. He’s only just over a year and a half old.
I won’t use my local vets for a neuter. They’re not pig savvy, and have said several times over the years that they don’t like anesthetising guinea pigs.
This week I’m chicken and geriatric duck sitting at my parents’ house whilst they’re on holiday. Again – no listed pig savvy vets from this website, but after asking the Vet. Nurses at work and a quick chat to a small animal practice near my parents I decided it was Brunel’s best option. The vet who would operate also has additional training in small animal anaesthesia.
The neuter operation took place on Monday.
Brunel came through it. He’s eating (small appetite Monday night/Tuesday morning – much more normal Tuesday night/this morning) and is pooing and peeing away.
The wounds look clean, just a tiny scab next to the stitch on each side. The skin looks pale pink/normal, there doesn’t seem to be any seepage of any sort blood or otherwise. The skin temperature on the op. site feels the same temperature as his belly (very gentle feel with a small finger). He’s taking his pain medicine extremely well. I don’t know what’s in the mix, but he’ll almost suck it out of the syringe.
Does it all sound good/ok? Can I relax slightly and not expect to find puss and blood all over the place every time I go and see him, or is it still very early days yet? Will I know quickly if he develops and abscess?
