hi,,

Spice died about a month ago now and when i found her dead in her hutch i noticed that her toes and paws were bleeding.

They weren't bleeding alot for it to be all over the cage and Honey her cage pal was fine. Spice was just near the front of the cage lying next to the wooden divider in the middle of the hutch with her eyes open. This is completely different from how my last piggy died. I'm not sure what happened to Spice but she was 5 soon to be 6. I dont think i could have done anything because the day before she was absolutely fine - wheeking and running round her hutch.

What could have caused the bleeding of her front paws and claws? At first i thought she had done it herself or Honey. I'm confused.

Can anyone explain?

When piggies die they can do a sort of running action with their legs and maybe she did this and caught her toes on something. I'm sorry you lost Spice xx

It could be that Honey chewed at her feet in her attempt to get Spice to wake up & move, it's not unusual for cage-mates to nibble their departed friends as in the wild predators would be alerted to their position, therefore making them vulnerable

when roxy's sister ronnie died :( .. i found her in her hutch and roxy was nibbling her feet and this caused a bleeding to her feet and claws how you described .. i think that Niki may be correct here

So sorry to hear about Spice. The cuts to the feet were probably just honey trying to get Spice to waken up. One of my piggies died suddenly several weeks ago and the other female was nibbling and nuzzling her when I came home. It is probably just instinct. I know it is normal to think you may have overlooked something but if she was running about the night before then it was probably just her time to go to Rainbow Bridge. Spice will join my piggies Farquhar and Bob at the bridge and I'm sure they will all have fun together.

So sorry to hear about Spice :0 As Niki said really, Honey was probably trying to wake up her pal. My OH had 2 gerbils once and when one died, the other one was dragging him around the cage trying to wake him up :( xx

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. Rest well, sweet Spice. x

I was thinking the same as the others - Honey ws probably nibbling her feet trying to wake Spice up; or as rw3399 said she may have hurt her feet during the running actions. By the time those actions occur, the pig is pretty much gone anyway, she won't have been aware of what was happening.
