When taming new Guinea pigs is it better to

1. Feed them in their cages and have them come to you
or

2. Take them out of the cages where you are on same ground level and have them come to you
?

Yay my guinea pigs ate from my hand. Even the shyer one. At first the shyer one he squeled and then the other guinea came in his cage and ate from my hand after that the shy one ate from my hand also, he did. I'm so happy.

The first one is better - build up trust before you move on to the next stage. They are both babies still and are not very good with sitting on a lap and being cuddled for long anyway.

Great! That is what I did. I fed them both in their cages :)

It may be worth offering food to your piggy while she is in her cage and hopefully after time they will take it off you as they have done

Food is the best way to bribe, use food when you get round to lap times also. In a few weeks start lap time for a short amount of time at first and build up. We started off we laptimes for 1 minute with new piggies then pop them back, slowly increasing the time. They will soon associate you with food and good things but at first it takes a while to gain their trust.

I make a point of always hand feeding my three babies a bit before I put their nuggets and veggies in. It only took them 2 days to realise that, and now when I open their gate they come running to me and climb up on my lap looking for nibbles - still not keen on being picked up and cuddled though, but we're getting there! (They're only a few months old). Previously I've fostered older piggies which had never been handled much, and they took a lot longer to eat from my hand, but were happier being cuddled, although catching them was a challenge!
