Hi guys!
New Guinea mum here, and naturally worrying about every tiny thing 🤣
I'm sorry if this has already been asked before, but when is it normal to start thinking about boar cleaning? My boys are only 12 and 14 weeks, I'm not sure if this is something I need to be concerned about yet? I tried to check the penis on one of them but he absolutely hated it and wouldn't stay still at all, even with treats, so I couldn't do it. Should I wait for them to be a bit older and more settled before I need to worry about this?
Thanks guys!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’ve had 8 boars in total and I’ve never routinely cleaned them out. They do that themselves. That said you do have to look at their privates on their weekly check and weigh in but only from the outside. Just make sure there are no lumps or bumps, swellings, red areas, hay stuck in their penis or sperm rods. They are a bit young for impaction but later check for that too. I currently have Percy and Pepper. Post some pictures of your boys if you’d like to share.

Ah brilliant, thank you! Not too sure what I'm going to do about my little squirmy boy, I think I'll just have to keep trying :)
Here they are 😊

Yeah Rio is a heck of a lot squirmier than Del! Del is so placid he just sits there on his bum and lets me do what I need to do (although not without a bit of vocal complaining! 🤣).

same here! della is super squirmy but her sister luna just sits there haha. is rio the boss? my dellas the submissive pig and the smaller one so wondering if thats why shes more like it!

I check my boys but I’ve not had to do anything. They are just over 4 years old.

Often when a piggy squirms and complains during handling it’s because they feel confident and safe enough to tell you that they don’t like it. A piggy sitting completely still is usually too afraid to fight back. So being wriggly and complaining can be a good sign!

It's one of them things that you don't interfere with unless you absolutely need to (remember to use gloves if you do). I've got 4 boars between the ages of 11-18 months old. One I've never needed to do anything for, one only needed help with dried boar glue after an op, one had a sperm rod which to be honest didn't seem to bug him but gently removed it anyway and the the other seems to manage to get hay in a certain place and I don't know how but it's not comfy. I've not needed to do a proper cleaning like you may think. They can do that all by themselves. By all means check weekly just in case theres something in there worth removing but you should be fine! ☺️
