As some of you know we had Dexter neutered last tuesday so he can eventually be paired up with pancake who recently lost her cagemate.

all was fine until saturday when i noticed a few spots off blood on his bedding so whipped him straight to the vet who confirmed her has an infection. he was given Baytril and Metacam on Friday for the swelling and i was then advised to clean the wound twice a day.

got up this morning and found loads of blood on the bedding and a very sheepish looking dexter glaring at me. upon further inspection i found the stiches have unraveled and the scab has fallen off so what was left it a hole where his testicle was and dried blood. needless to say i freaked out, cleaned the cage out and called the vets who saw him within 20 minutes. basically, the infection is localized around the wound but caused (along with dexter probably fiddling) the stiches to come out!

thankfully, although it looks awful, the skin underneath has begun to re-join so although he looks like he has a gaping hole, it isnt exposing any of his insides (sorry, quite graphic!)

so, with more baytril and metacam we were also sent home with some antispetic solution and to continue cleaning twice a day. vet wants to see him again on wednesday but has said if its not looking any better we may have to have more surgery to physically take the infection out.

thankfully dexter is still a very happy and strong piggie who continues to eat and drink and only throws a mild fit when he has to take his meds!

i feel so worn out and guilty about the whole situation now, we have done it for the right reason but its horrible. on a happier note, this has only happened on one side so we can see what it should look like!

Poor Dexter. They are such a worry aren't they. I do hope it heals up soon for the lad!

Thanks Jayne. I am just so glad he doesnt appear to be in any apparent pain (until i was the area!) Regular check ups make me feel better about everything x

Poor you and poor Dexter. Hoping he recovers soon. Well done for being so on the ball with him. Lots of healing vibes to your little one x x

Oh gosh that must have given you such a shock. I am so sorry this has happened. Poor little man. I really hope he heals soon.

Dexter update

Whilst he is still a very happy pig, the infected side still hasn't fully healed (although hasn't got worse) so tomorrow morning dexter is scheduled for surgery to remove the infection and help it along.

Dexter has been having vet visits every other day and the wound is now full of pus which is good but our vet felt surgery is the best option.

Will keep * updated xx

Poor Dexter, hope the surgery goes well tomorrow. How is his weight? Is he managing to maintain weight through all this?

Best wishes,

shiny :)

throughout the whole ordeal so far he went from 1.12 to 1.13 to 1.12 so doing well.
just spoke to the vet and he is awake and we have to pick him up at 6pm.

He is doing well to maintain his weight :) hope he is ok today after this surgery x

Well dexter is home and I am so glad we opted for second surgery because when the vet took a peek at the "healed" side that too had a slight infection. Dexter is now on 2 types of antibiotic as well as Metacam- poor little thing.

He has buried himself in a towel inside his bed and is sulking a little but the vet said although the op was more intense than anticipated they are very pleased with the result. I on the other hand feel like the worlds worst GP mum for putting him through this but I know when he finally gets to meet pancake it will be worth it. He has eaten 1.5 pieces of the 3 pieces of cucumber we gave him which is good considering its covered in recovery powder as recommended!

Back to the vets on Monday so fingers crossed all is ok xx

Hope Dexter feels better soon. Don't feel guilty once he's with Pancake he'll thank you for it. Sending him lots of vibes for a fast recovery

Dexter seems to be feeling much better today, eating and drinking bless him.

2 nice big scars on his shaved bottom but fingers and toes crossed we are on the road to recovery!

thank you everyone for your healing thoughts. i am absolutley delighted to announce dexter has been discharged from the vets! he is on meds until friday but after that, we let nature take its course and heal naturally!
