Where did people get there pigs from

never had one before as they were a new breed to me, how much things have changed in a short time since last having them. But like I researched the breed of dog that suited me, I did the same with piggies and they suit me to the ground which was why I wanted to have one (or more if there were any in rescue). I think they are great :)

I also love rexes, we have two silver agouti bi`s a brown and white teddy, and a cross breed black and tan , the rexes and teddy are full of character..:)p

Our first trio - Artoo, Gidgit & Squirt - came from a pet shop, long before I was even aware that small animal rescues exist and are packed to the rafters :(

When Artoo was bereaved of both her 'sisters' by May 2010 we adopted Blizzy & Maisie from Alice @ Windwhistle Warren. Maisie was 7 and died 3.5 wks later :( but Blizzy is still going strong at the ripe old age of 7.5!

Winnie was found wondering in a park by a park warden! She came to me via Chloe at Fat Fluffs (who are a rabbit rescue, but couldn't let her be PTS).

I rescued Dude and 2 pregnant females, from an abandoned property (with RSPCA aware) just after Xmas 2010. We rehomed the 5 babies and the mums but had Dude neutered and kept him!

Our most recent additions are Sadie & Coco - a pair of 4 year old sows that we adopted from Honeybunnies rescue in Feb 2011.

So we now have 2 trios - Artoo, Blizzy and Winnie; Dude, Sadie & Coco x)x)

Having never had piggies before but despite doing lots of reading to ensure they were the pets for us, my husband and I picked up Dexter and Earnie from Pets at Home in Maidenhead.

We bought everything there, the hutch, food, hay etc. as a package and I was impressed with the care and attention and questions they asked us before us handing the boys over. A couple of days later, they both had eye infections though and ended up at a piggy-savvy vet. I hadn't discovered this forum then but we treated them accordingly and they're now happy and healthy 13 month old boars although we've also been through a lice saga in that time!

On finding this wonderful forum I discovered I knew nothing! In the future, we will definitely rescue and I am in awe of the fabulous work rescues do and how many little piggies there are looking for forever homes. X

Freddie&Ringo were bought from a petstore, as were the girls. Quite a few of mine are the pigs considered to be 'unattractive' at the pet shops, although I don't see why, they're beautiful! Freddie has three ears, Amy was big and has what looks like a moustache and River was a funny looking little thing who was the 'runt' (she's very pretty now). Elphie&Glinda were from a petstore too, I nabbed Glinda because I didn't want her going to an inexperienced owner who didn't realise she was long-haired and might put her in a rescue somewhere.

I know a lot of people are against pet shops, and I am to an extent, but this particular store has a very good group of employees who really care about the animals, and I'd consider working there myself so I could 'educate' people, but I'm not sure how I'd feel if I saw someone who I didn't think should have one...

And Nelson is from a rescue centre. I tried to adopt three other white girls from a rescue but was unsuccessful :(

My Dad's first guinea pigs were rescued from down the road from people who didn't want them anymore, and he pretty much collected waifs and strays from then on! (they had 24 at one point)

RIP BOYS
Fudge - Vets
Dil -Vets
Coco - Pet Shop

Fennel - P@H
Cinnamon - P@H

Jasper - P@H
Hector - Pet Shop
Archie - Pet Shop

Jake - Pet Shop
Lentil - Aquatic Centre

New pig - Teresa :)

Yes I wasn't aware of many rescues before here but I have never felt guilty of owning all my lovely boars over the years. Though I will never buy from a pet shop again

My first two pigs were pet shop pigs, Spike and Gizmo (RIP)
Next was Stripes (RIP) from P@H adoption - for a change an unwanted pet rather than stock that couldn't be sold.
I then discovered this forum so when we lost Stripes, Spike being on his own went to visit Wheek and Squeak rescue in Southampton and chose a friend called Hector. We decided one friend wasn't enough, we had the space and there were over 100 little faces looking at us so we came home with Bob, George and Gerry as well!

I got my boys from Pets@Home and I'm happy I did.
I'd buy again, either from the rescue or from their store :)

I had two boys Truffle and Charm from Pets at Home years ago (total disaster had ringworm and Truffle had a heart condition but loved them to bits). They fell out, were neutered and I got Smudge fro pets at home before realising that they were in rescues. Angelcakes (no kidding) came from a Dudley rescue. When Truffle and the girls had passed on Indigo came from Rugby Rabbit Welfare to live with smudge. I didn't have gps for a couple of years after they all passed on (generally i do aging exotics) and then I fell in love with Priscilla and Amber from Walsall RSPCA, sadly Amber wasn't to be with us for long and I took Marmaduke from Walsall to live with Prissie. Then recently someone posted about Stella and Guiness two five year old free ads girls close to me and I couldn't bear to think of them elderly and unwanted.

I think a good rescue is the best place to get a GP from. They always come in good health and free up space for other neglected piggies. Free ads is only really for those with some knowledge and who is willing to take on some vets bills as they are often quite neglected.

* My 1st two piggies (Suki and Mei) came from a free add
* Chubi and Chu (R.i.p Chu) came from a ex breeder who was getting rid of all her animals.
* Pandora (R.I.P) came from a free add, later she was pts and she had so many health issues :(
* Chihiro came from a pet shop, impulse buy as she is gorgeous x) yet tbh her temprement isnt good.
* Romeo and Juliet both came from RSPCA

1 from a family friend who got borad with it

2 from pets at home adoption

and the other 4 are a mum and 3 daughters! mum was dumped at a bus stop, and my friend found her and bought it straight round to me afew days later pop out comes 3 babies!

My two came from kijiji (it's like craigslist, but with a better format). The story is that this family (mom, dad, two kids) had a female Guinea Pig, who lived alone in a C&C cage. They decided to get her a friend, but the new piggie was harboring some gifts, that miraculously showed up out of the blue one day. 3 months later, the family was feeling overwhelmed with 4 pigs (the two adults and two babies), so they decided to rehome the two babies. And that's how I got them.

We got our 2 lovely boys from RSPCA Middlesex. I was determined to rescue a pair but personally wherever you get them from they are better off in a loved home, they're born already you didn't stop that and now they just need love (and food!):^-

I got mine from the SSPCA, I don't know why anyone didn't want them they are such little darlings!

William & Keith RIP were from the pet shop in town - which I would never do again. I would always rescue now, which is where I got Alan & Clive from!

The 2 boys I got from my friend who is a swiss breeder and I would get from her again as she genuinly loves her pigs and they are well handled and cared for.

The two girls I got from pets at home adoption - they looked sp forlorn I had too - but I wouldnt get from there again.

I will try my local rspca - but I'm afrad they wouldnt rehome to me as we had to send a dog back there a few months ago.

All of mine came from P@H which I don't like admitting.

Maisie and Peaches came years ago before I knew about rescues etc. Rita came on a whim along with Gladys. I don't regret anything whatsoever as they are/were all lovely piggies. I just obviously wish Gladys hadn't been so ill.

I say I wouldn't get a piggie from P@H again but if I ever saw one that looked like it was in need then I might go back on my morals. I have now promised to myself that I won't buy my excel nuggets from there or any of the toys as it puts temptation in my way and I don't like supporting a company that I don't really agree with.

I have 7 so far:
Tigger and Munchie came from a local pet shop that I've used a few times now, always have nice healthy pigs. I think my piggles were not suitable for showing (lovely coats but they're Abby's and their rosettes aren't in the right place).
Malteaster: P@H Adoption Center
Butterscotch and Muffin: As above
Willow and Izzy: Milhaven Rescue (who I will be rescuing from for as long as they're around now I think!)

Mixed bag for my bunch! :)

Just thought I'd update this as the thread's active again; I now have 19. I got one of the new additions from a forum member who was looking for a new home for her. As I said in the above post I would be adopting from Milhaven for as long as they're around; needless to say the unaccounted for 11 guinea pigs have all come from Milhaven; one boy to pair up with Malteaser, two boars and eight lovely ladies who will eventually join up with the other girls!

I got my first two piggies JP and Fudge (now both deceased) from a pet shop and then i also got my next 5 Milly, Molly, Mandy, Kizzie and Sophie(the originals in the outdoor herd) from a garden centre. I got my 2 indoor original girls , Calli and Bling from a breeder (back in the days when i was none the wiser). I got another of my outdoor girls, Ink from a breeder of chocolate labradors ( i was visiting with my friend) and they had baby guinea pigs so i brought one home. I got Swizzles the outdoor boy from Rugby Guinea Pig Rescue and i got Yorkie the indoor boy from a pet shop. My 2 other indoor girls Tribble and Tibby are rescues from Bramley Cavies and i have 4 new additions to the outdoor herd, 1 from Bramley Cavies called BB and 3 from Honeybunnies called Dorcas, Minnie and Queenie.
We are about to bring home pig no 18 called Jasmine who is from Bramley Cavies and who has chosen to be a lone pig so she is going to move into my daughters room.

I also had 3 boys several years ago Chavo, Hector and Eddy that were from a pet shop but they started to fight so i separated and re homed them, 2 of them to a good friend of mine who spoils them rotten and one went to Tracey at Rugby who rehomed him to a lovely new home.

So i have made my mistakes in the past and have learnt so much through this forum, I will only ever re home from rescues now and i will never re home any of my pigs unless i absolutly can not take care of them any more xx
