I’ve just been looking for some more piggies. Would prefer not to go down the pets at home route. I’ve searched local rescusss and can’t find any very close to me with GPs. I’m in north easy uk, Durham area. If anyone knows of any please let me know. Thanks

North East Guinea Pig Rescue (NEGPR) is a good place to start. They're in the Newcastle area.

And Tees Valley Guinea Pig rescue is a bit further south in Stockton.

I have 5 piggies. 2 were up for adoption with the adoption for pets society. 1 I found in a terrible state in a run down back street pet shop so took her home and she is now boss pig. The 4th was thrown over my garden fence last year. She is a skittish timid girl but very sweet. The last arrived last week. she was brought from pets at home but the owners changed their minds and returned her so I took her in as the staff at the store know me rather well and asked if I would take her.

My 5 came from Pets at Home. It was originally 2 but it was buy 2 get 3 free that day! Later I discovered that the breeder had gone in holiday for 2 weeks and the person left in charge didn't separate the boys from the girls properly and there were a lot of pregnant sows as a result!

Various rescues and a friend who wasn't coping. You're right I definitely wouldn't go down the P@H route, there are far more problems like illness and pregnancy from those idiots. Plus it only supports their animal cruelty sadly. They shouldn't be allowed to touch animals let alone sell them imo :))

We're quite lucky that we have quite a few rescues so I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find some beauties soon! :)

We just got guinea pigs last week so I'm not an expert, but we decided strongly against a petshop or commercial breeder- its tricky because normally I would favour rescue animals but we wanted baby piggies without any psychological problems or illnesses because we have young nephews aged 4 and 7 who will see them every school holidays, so we wanted the piggies to be friendly, adaptable and live for a maximum lifespan in our home.
I just googled "guinea pigs for sale Liverpool" and straight away there were some obvious good leads and also obvious warning flags.
Overcharging at £30 or £40 per piggy? Showing a photo of 12 babies in an overcrowded cage with no mum in sight? NO!
We emailed a few people and asked lots and lots of questions, we were probably quite annoying but a good owner should want a nice new home and only charge a nominal fee. Ask for pics- photo of child holding 2 piggies is good, photo of 12 in a cage bad. Date of birth? A good owner who isnt breeding for money should have exact birth dates. How many available? If more than 4 that suggests commercial breeding for profit. Do they prefer woodshavings or straw on the floor? What's their favorite food? When you collect the piggies can you see their mums and meet the family? We narrowed down the search based on this sort of thing to get Piggle and Puggle locally for £15 each after a week of ruling bad breeders and owners out. They are cousins and their owner mated 2 sisters who lived in the same hutch at the same time and they had 4 babies a week apart. But rescue is always better ethically, you just need to balance your family's emotional and piggy needs with the needs of piggies generally...
