Where does everyone get their Timothy hay from and what’s it like?

It’s an absolute minefield with the options out there so just wanted a quick bit of a heads up. Along with the fact some companies have really stalky stuff which mine just won’t touch tbh. I’ve had a lot of Guniea pigs and these may be the fussiest going! Well one of them. I think I may have to go back to a decent meadow hay and orchard hay from hay box and have done with it. They loved one and now they’re just turning their noses up at it. I don’t have the money or the space to keep buying it! Vet checked a couple weeks ago to for just a general check up

I’m gonna mix meadow orchard and Timothy together to save wasting it all!

I tried the softer hay box one, but it turns out that mine love Nibble and Gnaw, but mostly the soft parts. They seem like to like the foraging part. Lots of waste but they are delighted by it (and not easily pleased). Have just had to accept the waste! GOod luck with the mixing plan!

Thanks, I think I may pass on this current box of Timothy to someone I know who has rabbits and go back to a decent meadow and orchard hay from hay box. I don’t know why I keep trying Timothy to be fair because eating less of it is a lot worse than eating more of a hay which might have slightly more calcium etc! It’s me being me 🤣

Little hay company does one called pure timothy which has been going down well here.

We buy our timothy hay from Haybox. They love the soft cut one. We also get the special cut timothy hay from The Hay Experts, but it's £18.99 for a 1kg bag so we're giving it as a treat.

Also, hubby is selling our extra 3 bags of The Hay Experts timothy hay for £40 as my guinea pigs won't eat it due to it being so soft and they prefer the bit stalky ones at the moment. Please let me know if you're interested.

I get ours from pets at home and the boys seem to like it?
I buy a bag of meadow hay and Timothy hay for their bedding in their house, and then just Timothy hay to eat. Their absolute favourite is when I hide their greens under a fresh load of Timothy hay.

I've had the same issue with my pigs, always end up back with haybox. Timothy soft cut it all leafy parts and it's lovely. I used it in hospital cages after surgeries as it was soft enough. That being said, Timothy is the preference for mine, followed by orchard. Meadow seems to always go to waste and I don't understand why as I always see it as a 'pick and mix ' style hay but clearly there's something I don't know, and the piggies are keeping their secrets 😅

My boys are tucking into sweet green hay from Nature's Own with relish. Not Timothy, but I thought I'd mention it as it's great 👍

I use the sweet meadow as a treat hay or for any ill/older piggies struggling with their weight in combination with Nature's Own meadow hay. But then I have had piggies long before timothy hay came on the scene. When I was testing various UK based farm hay providers, including their timothy hay and mixes, mine totally ignored the timothy but they certainly love their richer sweet meadow hay. I usually feed it at a ratio of 4 bales of Devon meadow and 1 bale sweet meadow hay.

In the end it comes down to what your piggies like best and what is most economical for you. There is no firm rule. Don't be afraid of ordering various tester offers and just trial what your piggies like best.
