After owning guineas/rabbits most of my childhood, my partner and I have decided on two sows for our 3 children. Other than P@H there doesn't seem to be anywhere else AND they all look like rats!

Does anyone know of any reputable breeders or shelters in Cumbria?

I was impressed with you asking where to find guinea pigs and was going to point you towards some rescues but your comment about how they look worries me. In my eyes all guinea pigs are beautiful.

Sorry, my post was in no way nasty or to cause offence. I am sure we all have our reasons for not liking P@H and I have a long list believe me - I didn't think here was the place to air my views!

I read somewhere that the longer face is a characteristic of commercial breeding which is another thing that put me off. Forgive me if I am wrong . . .

I hate that place too for the way they treat animals. You could be right about the longer face. Sorry if I sounded to harsh.

I don't know if there's any rescues on your door step but you could maybe try these, if they don't have guinea pigs they may be able to pint you in the right direction:-

Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre, Penrith Tel. 07764 352835
Sokel Guinea Pig Rescue, Alston Tel. 07818 885260

I have a friend in Cleator Moor, West Cumbria who has 2 piggies but he's heard of nothing in his area.

I don't think longer faces is something to be concerned about, in truth they are more natural, purebreed show pigs are often bred with more rounded short faces as some people think this looks nicer. Young piggies often have ears that stick up making them look a bit ratty (personally i like the ratty looking pigs) and when they are scared their ears stick up more. Of course this doesn't mean you should buy them from P@H

I hope that you will find piggies of your liking! A good rescue has the advantage that they know their piggies' characters; they only rehome healthy (quarantined) and guaranteed not pregnant piggies. Please be aware that things have moved on a lot in all parts of piggy life over the last few years; we have many information threads on all aspects of piggy life.

Of course, you will instinctively prefer the kind of faces that you have grown up, especially if you have happy memories. I grew up with perus and still love aby type faces that little bit more (although I am very fond of all my piggies). ;)

Thank you for doing some research before rushing out to purchase your piggies. Please do consider rescues, there are so many pigs of all shapes, sizes, colours and ages in rescue, through absolutely no fault of their own, just waiting for a caring home just like yours. Have a look at the Piggy Bank map which was linked in one of the posts above, lots of rescues have websites and it's well worth giving some a call to see who they have waiting for homes. As you will have probably realised from some of the posts on this thread, the forum is very pro rescue, it's wonderful you are doing your homework before getting your pigs, so please stick around there are lots of helpful threads on piggy care. :)
