My Paddy is slowly recovering from his dental surgery last Wednesday, he is eating independently which is great, but my only worry is that I think my mum accidentally caused him to aspirate some medicine this weekend whilst giving him the syringe full. I was away camping for the weekend so she was piggy sitting for me. Paddy’s eyes have been watery and he’s been rather puffed up, slightly cool to the touch and clicking a little when he breathes. I suspect he is developing a chest infection, so I’ve continued with the Baytril that my local vet gave me earlier last week, and I’m keeping him warm, but I think he needs something stronger, does anyone know of any other antibiotics that can be used to treat a chest infection? I’m continuing to monitor him closely and will book him in with the vet again if no signs of improvement with the Baytril. Other than that he is eating, drinking and going to the toilet as normal. I just need to get his breathing right. My local vet isn’t a specialist though and it’d be impossible for me to get back to the specialist until Saturday at the earliest, so I just wondered if anyone could tell me common antibiotics used to treat them, then I can take the list with me to the local vet and ask him for a stronger one. It’ll be much quicker and better for Paddy if I can get it locally.

Hoping my baby boy starts to feel better soon ❤

Personally I'd ask the vet for Sulfatrim, I've always had good results with it for URI's etc. Sending healing vibes for Paddy xx

Hi! It depends on the type of bacteria. A swab and a culture may be able to help your vet work out which antibiotic is most effective.

Paddy’s still not right unfortunately. He keeps going all puffy after eating and looks uncomfortable, plus is clicking slightly when he breathes and has watery eyes. I hadn’t noticed until yesterday that he’s barely pooing. So I gave him some mushy pellets with probiotics and will give critical care tonight to try to stimulate his digestive tract.

I took him to the local vets last night (thinking it was his chest that was bothering him as there is a distinct light click when he breathes and hoping to get some antibiotics), but the vet listened to his chest/lungs and said that it was clear, which baffled me. Then he proceeded to have a go at me for going to different vets, and spent the majority of the consultation criticising Ashleigh and the dosages that they’ve used of Metacam, even though I explained that they were exotics specialists and did dental surgery, and that I have to fit the vet consults around my lifestyle / current study course. Then he didn't even prescribe anything or do anything, so that was a complete waste of £30. I’m definitely not going back there again. So it’s back to Ashleigh tomorrow to try and find out what’s wrong. God I pray this will all end soon, I’m so exhausted and don’t know how much more of this I can take. I just want my baby to be right 💔😪❤️

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I’ll keep you updated.

HUGS

Are you monitoring the weight daily to keep an eye on the food intake? Cheap kitchen scales from a supermarket (for about £10) will do the trick and are much more reliable than poos, which can run about a day or two behind the intake.

Maybe a diuretic would also help if there is any fluid on his chest? Sending you a huge hug and love to Paddy x

Yes I’ve bought a new battery for my scales and started to weight him the day before yesterday. He’s back at Ashleigh today being monitored and checked over by the vet. I hope he gets sorted. ❤️

All the best!

Paddy Update:

Well Paddy was discharged from the vets on Thursday night from his overnight stay/observation. He’s been given 4 different meds and must be syringe fed to support his food intake for a while, until he builds up his strength and puts on weight. The vet said it could just be his teeth still hurting him and his digestion slowed down due to his teeth issues, and that we should follow this regime for another week then see where he’s at. He still doesn’t seem right to me though. I’m praying he picks up and it’s nothing serious. I love you little man.🤞🏻❤️ x

Fingers crossed he starts to recover soon. I’ve been through a few Gut mortality issues over the years with my pigs so know the stress. Hopefully he’ll pick up soon.

You are doing everything possible for little Paddy so fingers firmly crossed he turns a corner soon.
Remember to be kind to yourself, as you could not be doing more than you already are.

He hasn’t seemed as puffed up these past two days, but is still barely passing anything. I’ve taken to putting tiny amounts of hay cookie into his mouth so that he at least gets some fibre. All the sloppy liquid feed isn’t really helping things to get moving, even with the Cisapride. :/
