Hi guys. Am taking Toffee to vets in an hour. I'm worried he may have a URI. Which is the best antibiotic? I'm sure I've read that Baytril isn't always the best? Not that I can tell the vet what to do, but I want to do my research...

I think baytril is the choice for upper respitory infection, septrin is for urinary tract infection. Have you weighed your pig and how old? how bad is the infection do you think? Get bio lapis while you are at vet as this is very important when taking baytril for keeping gut function healthy!

Sorry Lucinda, I disagree!

Baytril irreversibly inhibits bacterial gyrase, a key enzyme in bacterial replication, resulting in rapid destruction of the pathogens. Baytril concentrates in tissues, fluids and phagocytic cells of the respiratory system. Its potent bactericidal effect is achieved even at low concentrations.3
Baytril attains excellent therapeutic concentrations in pulmonary and bronchial tissues, secretions and phagocytic cells. These properties are of great value in the treatment of conditions such as acute and chronic respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia, where the penetration of the antibacterial agent makes the difference in the speed of control of the infections

Mine have had baytril to good effect, unless the pig is allergic.
Make sure the vet weighs the pig, if quite big may need a higher dosage. For a mild infection, 0.2mls x twice a day is given by syringe, usually a shot by injection is given by the vet in the first instance. If the infection is deep seated, 0.4mls can be given x twice daily or if the pig is pretty big.

Hey all. He's been given 0.2mls of Baytril twice a day and bio lapis to go in his water. I think he likes the bio as I waved the water bottle under his nose and he drank for about a minute! He seems a bit perkier anyhow, so fingers crossed!

My vet always tells me to put the baytril in water which seems to be pretty useless to me cos the piggy I was treating died. He has never told me that I could give it direct by syringe before - wish he had.:(

I'm so sorry you lost your piggie :-( I have a small syringe. It's tricky to do but a much better way, although I'm sure Toffee will disagree!

That is such a shame Nemo :( You shouldnt give any meds through the water bottle, not even bio lapis really..give all by syringe so you know exactly what dose is being given. The bio lapis should be given 2 hours after the baytril as well so as they dont interfere with eachother.

My pig Rosie had a wonky head and the vet suspected an ear infection so she had to have 0.2ml of baytril but diluted to 1.0

Baytril isn't pleasant, not that I have tasted it but Debbie told us all she got some in her mouth from a flick off a syringe...lol I agree with Fi not to water it down in anyway same with the pro biotic. Oh hes not going to want his meds but wrap him in a towel and put his back to your tummy and he'll have no choice.

Hope he gets well soon. :)

He took the first lot because he was greedy! I put the syringe near his mouth and he grabbed it into his mouth so I pushed the lot in! I think he thought it was going to be food! I'm betting he won't fall for that next time though, he didn't look like he enjoyed the after-taste!

Seeming perky still anyhow so fingers crossed!
