Hey all! Just got 2 male guinea pigs who are about a year old, i havnt had pigs before so I'm a bit unsure of how to feed them.
I have a got a 5kg bag of "guinea pig museli" from pets@home, its says with added vitamin C, is this muesli any good or are just pellets better?
I give them hay all the time, and i dont know how much fresh veg to give them a day? Gave them a carrot each, small bit of broccli and cauliflower today (not the leaves, the main bit) and they dont seem to like cucumber (a bit like me :P).
A dont have a measuring jug thing so i cannot measure what 30-50g (their reccommended feeding guide?) is that about a handful?
Thanks for any help :)

Hiya and welcome to the forum. I found this sticky if you want to learn more about veg etc http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42

I fed my piggys gerty guinea pig which is a museli type and they love it. I have started to mix in some nuggets too. Be sure to check out the free sample threads as thats where I got my nuggets from all for free!
Mine have unlimited hay everyday and fresh vegs. I give mine a bowl full of vegs each morning to share and they have some more during floortime or I give them grass/dandelions. You just have to stick to trying a few vegs each day as it can take a while for piggys to take to veg, also try not to give them to much to start with and dont try lots of types of veg at once as sometimes it can upset there tummies.
When it comes to meauring the food out I just eye ball it and fill ther dishes up half way and only add more once most of the food is gone, which for me is usually the next day.
Hope this helps, I'm sure there are more knowledgeble people on here than me as I'm new to this forum and owning piggys, but I have learnt so much from this forum its excellent.
Have fun with your piggys. :)

I prefer the nuggets to the muesli, mainly because my lot have been known to throw the bits they don't like out the cage which is about half the flakes and sometimes even throw them AT me if I'm too close while looking at me in disgust because I didn't sit and pick all the nasty bits out for them :(

I'm not a fan of any of the mixes/muesli's because of selective feeding but the colours in them look so unnatural and makes me wonder what gets put in them. I use pellets/nuggets and I like to use a mixture of more than one so that they get some variety and also so that if anything should happen to the suply of one I still have the other to fall back on. I feed science selective or burgess excel mixed with Pets at Home nuggets - very little difference in ingredient list for Burgess excel and PaH pellets.

As i got th guineas from someone else, they gave me the food they used to feed them which is tesco basics giunea pig muesli, so i went to pets@home bought some of their branded muesli a 5kg bag on the day i got them, but in the last few days ive noticed that, after reading the food posts about guineas selecting what they want... mine seem to be doing that (with their tesco food) the bowl is as full as i left it this morning, so i put a small amout of the pets@home muesli in the bowl about half an hour ago with the tesco stuff thts still in there, and they still havnt really touched it... I guess ill have to try them with nuggets and pellets like lesaC, just ive wasted £6 on a bag of food they wont eat.. and dont know what to do with it :S

Oh i also bought someof the pets@home hay aswell a "large" bale and they dont seem to be eating much of that either! Theyve been given bob martin medow hay by the other owners and they ate that all when i put it in, but now when i put the pah hay in they dont seem interested in it and theres loads left in the cage.. :S should i try mixing the pah and bob martin hay together and weaning them off the bob maartin hay that way orr will they never take to thepets at home hay?

Just these 2 products i got from there both said suitable for guineas and they arent even touching it... :S Will i be able to take them back and change them for something else? as it says on the muesli bag "if your not happy with the prduct we will refund it..."

Thnank you!

If you leave the hay in they will eat it in the end. Maybe mix it for now and slowley put less and less bob martin hay in?
