Dannii.

Hi everyone,
I'm basically concerned about what foods i can safely give my guniea pigs daily without having to worry about them having too much calcium in their diets etc.

After researching ive realised that giving them carrots everyday is bad aswell as broccoli being bad if given everyday as it builds up gas.

Parsley is said to not be given everyday as it contains a lot of calcium, same with Kale.

So i was just wondering,
1. Would it be ok if i gave my guniea pigs Cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, Pepper everyday?
2. Carrots twice a week and strawberries, perhaps oranges twice a week and a variation of Parsley, Kale, Broccoli a few times a week?
3. Oranges - Should i peel off the skin or leave it on?

Thanks in advance for your time. :)

it is said cabbage & sprouts shouldn't be every day either. Mine are both fussy animals and only like the so called "bad" foods.

George will only eat: carrots celery lettuce Spinach & trimmed beans so just alternate then on diff days

Tiger will only eat, Peppers, lettuce spinach cucumber and trimmed beans. I let tiger have peppers everyday but other stuff I vary.

Keep trying new veg but you may find they won't eat many of the types on the list or maybe mine are just so spoilt they have become fussy

From the shopping list, the safe everyday foods are:
Coriander
Chard
Lettuces
Cucumber (in moderation)
Peppers
Courgette
Cherry tomatoes
Corn husks and silks
Strawberries
Grass

So in answer to your questions -

1. Cabbage, brussels sprouts and cauliflower leaves are all too gassy to be fed daily. Cabbage can be fed in very small amounts per day if the pig isn't susceptible to gas. Peppers of all colours can be fed daily.

2. Strawberries can be given daily, so you could increase those if you like, and everything else you listed is fine to rotate through a couple of times a week.

3. Personally I don't like giving orange peel, I just feed the segments. There is a risk of mouth sores when feeding acidic fruits - apple and orange especially - so don't feed too often and cut into small chunks when you do give them.

It's great that you're figuring out the diet so much. You can be fairly flexible once you know what is best to limit the feeding of, the key is usually feeding most foods in moderation.

Thankyou for your helpful replies.

Mine are being awkward atm and not touching the peppers which I'm quite disappointed about as peppers could be fed everyday.

However the cabbage they all enjoyed thankfully.

Unfortunately mine love carrots but after reading that carrots can lead to problems ive decided to not include carrots in their diet only in small portions throughout the week.

With the cherry tomatoes how many should i give them daily? Also will i have to remove the seeds?

Thankyou in advance :)

You can give them 1-3 a day. Mine love them but I find just one a day is good. (Besides, with 8 pigs I get through a tub of them very quickly just giving one a day!).

Seeds don't have to be removed, but ideally should if you feed daily.
Personally I do remove the seeds (cut the tomato in half and squeeze/scoop the seeds out while rinsing under the tap). My pigs prefer them without seeds, and it's too messy to leave them in when giving every day!
Also the insides of the tomato can be acidic, so to prevent mouth sores from daily feeding of them, the seeds should really be removed.

all this info is really useful! I tend to buy different stuff every week to see what they will like and also so they have different things every day cos i wasnt sure what could be fed daily! Very very helpful everyone!

thanks for this info, i'd never thought to feed my guineas tomato or peppers. had some in the house and just tried them out. the peppers seemed quite popular but the tomatoes completely ignored
