Hi! I often have trouble knowing which brand of hay to get my guinea pig. Which hay has the least 'tiny bits' in the bag? I have tried a bunch of different brands, and they always have a bunch of tiny bits in the bag, which get EVERYWHERE and don't tend to stay in the hay rack, and they have gotten stuck in my piggies' eyes. :soz:
Which brand gives the LONGEST hay with the least bits?
Thanks!! :)

Hello, welcome to the forum.

We feed a meadow hay from either our local pet supply store or the soft hay from dustfreehay.co.uk and oxbow Timothy hay.

I am sure you will get lots of other suggestions too. Hope you enjoy the forum

i use a variety of sources, large 20kg bale from a farm for bedding and foraging, timothy hay uk....for hay racks, that is uk grown timothy hay,as good if not better than oxbow, orchard grass hay big box from oxbow via hay experts, oat hay ,i usually give these as treats in there hay racks.dust free soft hay is excellent hay..if you have a small number of piggies i would recommend this . It really is what suits you .your budget and your piggies.

My 6 pigs are addicted to Oxbow Orchard Grass so I now have to buy it by the big bale from the hay experts. I only use it in racks to save on waste as it's so expensive but they absolutely love it - they have the cheaper ings hay from 'hay and straw' in their forage box - I also use b&m meadow hay in an emergency :) xx

I use the meadow hay from NaturesOwnPets and generally it is very good. It is long, soft and my piggies go nuts for it. But even though it's dust extracted, there are some short bits and some dusty bits. I'm not sure you can totally avoid it. It's a natural product and it does tend to vavey a bit even within a brand - I've had a couple of bags that had a higher amount of thistle in and one or two bags that were quite short but the producers don't use insecticides, weed killers etc so there's enevitably a trade off.
I use hay loose in my cage so it gets everywhere anyway !

I use various hay from Zooplus, plus Burgess Dandilion and something with Timothy hay. I usually get a high quality hay to mix with a lesser quality hay as then it lasts longer and gives the piggies a choice of what they want to eat. The browner the hay the less I like it.

I get hay in bales from a local farm. The strands are always long and although sometimes a bit coarse, my pigs seem to love it. The latest hay from a different farm is very soft and green which they seem to prefer, again the strands are very long and they love to burrow in it.
Before I got hay from a farm I used to use Pure pastures meadow hay. They sell the 4kg bags for £3.50 in the range. This was also quite good hay for long strands and I never found many small bits left at the end of the bag, of course there will always be a few with whatever hay you use.

Mine love the 5 a day Hay from The Range. Its a lovely hay.

Mine like Oxbow Timothy hay. I find that it's mainly long, thick strands that don't get stuck all over the fleece like the pets at home stuff I used to buy did. I buy the 1.1kg bag though, i bought the smaller bag before and it seemed to be a lot smaller bits that did get stuck to the fleece.

It's definitely trial and error. For example loads of the forum piggies seem to love the oxbow Timothy hay but our girls turned their noses up at it! They like the Burgess Timothy with the dandelion in, but the strands are quite short. I buy from Hay and Straw that @flowerfairy mentioned. And then mix different hays together. They do small trial packs so you can see if you and the piggies approve!

The 10kg bag from westcountrypets on ebay was horrible. Smelt sour, a bit like haylage does. YUK. Have messaged them asking how I go about returning it.
