I currently have two types of food in my house. Wagg Guinea Pig Crunch which is muesli and Harrington's Optimum Guinea Pig Food which is nuggets.

When I got them, their previous owner gave me the Wagg so I assume they've been on it for a while. But they don't really seem keen on it. They eat the green bits and the brown nuggets but leave the rest. So it mostly just gets chucked in the bin. But they get tons of hay and veg every day so I wasn't worried about them getting skinny. But I guess it'll be bad in the long run if they don't eat enough dry food...

I haven't tried them on the Harrington's yet. I didn't really want to change their diet in case they didn't eat it and went hungry. So is it worth a try? Has anyone else tried this food and are nuggets better for guinea pigs than muesli? x

Hi, nuggets are better for guinea pigs than musli because with musli they can selective feed and leave the bits that they don't want therefore not getting the different vitamins. Please note, if you change from their musli to nuggets you must do it slowly over a few weeks because otherwise it can give you guineapigs an upset stomach.

I would add some of the Harrington's to the Wagg Muesli & check & see if they's eating the pellets. If they are then gradually give more of that & less of the Wagg.

Nuggets are better than the museli as it prevents selective feeding. As has been said introduction to the pellets needs to be done gradually over a few weeks, start off by adding a handful to their current museli and see how it goes down. Gradually change the ratio of pellets:museli day by day until you have a just a bowl of pellets. Mine go mad for Harringtons pellets so hopefully they will be a hit.

Nuggets are better than muesli as they are less sweet and prevent selective feeding. Recent research has linked muesli to poor dental health in rabbits so many large pet retailers have removed all manufacturers muesli from sale. It is likely that in the near future it will be confirmed that the same is true for guinea pigs as they have very similar (but not the same...) dietary requirements and need for high fibre food and hay intake to maintain good dental health.

If you are doing any change in food please do it gradually but it sounds like the Wagg isn't popular anyway so it's worth a shot!
