Which is better hay or fleece?

I have always used hay and sawdust in my piggies cage. But recently I've been thinking about swapping to fleece because its cheaper to by a couple of primark fleeces and swap them every other day than to keep buying hay and sawdust. I then thought of the smell though with a fleece is it smellerer or ok? Also my 2 guinea pigs popcorn alot and there is always hay and sawdust everywhere. I put a litter tray in but they didn't use it so I have to clean them out alot, would it be easier with fleeces because you only need to tip all the poo in the bin? Please answer! Thanks!inbreeding

From what I have learnt from this forum, sawdust is not good for guinea pigs. Sometimes, even woodshavings are no good if they have too much dust in them... which alternatively makes sawdust even worst.

I would recommend the fleece, although some members have said that it does become smelly. What will you keep under the fleece? Maybe put some puppy pads underneath so that the urine gets absorbed more.

I hope someone else will be able to give you better advice. :)
 
Fleece is great to use. You have to wash and dry it three times to make it water proof. I use a layer of towels and two layers of fleece. I get mine from primark too. Three times a day I pick poops so it is nice and clean and every three days I change all the bedding and wash it. I think it is almost impossible to litter train piggies. I gave up!
 
Don't the guinea pigs need their poos left in though, as they eat some of them as part of their eating cycle?

The ones they eat are eaten straight away before they touch the floor. Have you ever seen your piggy with their head between their legs? They are eating their poops.

I think I will try fleeces

Thank you for the replies I think I will try fleeces and I did find some puppy pads in pound empire so they are cheap. Thanks again!
 
Furry friends makes a good point though, even when you change they still need hay to eat as it should make up about 80% of their diet.

I use fleece, And I will never use anything else. :)
 
Please, please, please ensure they have plenty of hay to eat, and I mean plenty. I don't mean just a bit in a hayrack, I mean lots. It is so important for their health and also for their teeth. I know fleece can look attractive, but please remember that hay is an essential part of their diet. Use fleece by all means but give them lots of hay too.
 
Try putting the hay and their food bowls on top of the litter tray (with something absorbent in the bottom of the litter tray like newspaper or carefresh etc). Then they will do most of their poops in there, not because they are litter trained but because they poop where they sit, and they like sitting round eating hay or tunnelling in it :)

Mine don't tend to drag much hay out (not that that bothers me) but the litter tray is fairly spacious.

I just tip out the litter tray every day as vast majority of poop are in there and change the fleece every 3 days or so :)

I didn't mean hay I ment sawdust only just realise why people keep saying they need hay. Soo yeah I meant sawdust :)
