I have read all the guides about the pellet food but I wondered which brand is the preferred one. Or because it is only 10% of what they eat does it not make much difference as long as it is a decent one?
The ones I was considering are:
Versale laga cavy combined
Science selective
Oxbow cavy cuisine
Burgess.

versale lage cavie complete is grainless which is considered to be better, zooplus do a good range of grainless pellets but not all pigs will eat them ! it really comes down to your budget and you and your piggies preference.i use a selection of harringtons, burgess, rosewood,to attempt to prevent piggies getting fixated on a particular pellet.:)

Choose a grainfree pellet made of grass and hay without any sugars and molassas (difficult to find). And don't feed your piggies with the dose suggested by the firm that is always too much. Piggies must eat hay (and grass), few vegs and very few pellets. Mine don't eat many pellets and have a great health; I give them Versele Laga Complete + Croci GuineaPig, an italian brand pellets made with only organic grass and no grains/sugars, far better than Oxbow and other famous brands; and it is even cheaper... but I don't see it is sold in UK. I give them only 10-20grams divided in two piggies.
Read the labels on the boxes, the ingredients, the more long fibres the better. And anyway, the less amount the better (because if they don't have pellets they will eat more hay/grass and their intestinal flora will always be well developed and active)

Ours get rosewood natures menu from time to time and they really like those, theyre grain free and mostly hay and plants. I supplement those with pure grass pellets, pure grass cobs and 100% hay pellets, the ones I'm using at the minute contain over 60 different types of grass!
Oxbow is apparently considered the best but it concerns me that it contains salt and molasass in some of the feeds.

I think whats 'best' varies from person to person and pig to pig :) as long as its a good quality grain free one I doubt it matters too much as its such a small part of their diet.

Can I ask where you get your grass and hay pellets from? Sounds great! :)

I imagine they would! The pure grass ones smell a great deal like readigrass which I'm very allergic to, even my skin comes up in welts, but I get no reaction at all from the pellets so id imagine they would be good for people wanting to feed grass but have allergies as well..or even people who just dont have access to grass.

I like the fact that Galens Garden gives the nutritional values of each feed too, I'm definitely considering their meadow cobs :)

Ooh that's an extra food to add to the list! I currently use a mix (the piggies are way less fussy now that I mix pellets) of Rosewood, JR Grainless and Versele Laga. So I will look to add that Galens to the list!

Grainless is definitely the way to go :)

I get them online from Galens Gardens. I also buy a lot of their dried herbs and hay...pretty much everything ive bought from her has been demolished by the pigs!

Oh, thank you for sharing that.

Which are the ones you order? And do you order some other things from there, which your pigs like? Their products look very interesting, especially the oat seedheads

At the moment I'm feeding a mix of pellets, specifically the 'pure grass pellets' 'hi fibre grass pellets' 'Green oat grass pellets' and the 'apple pellets' I'm going to be trying out some of the others next time I order too, but so far, those are the ones theyre quite keen on and I mix them in with Rosewoods naturals meadow menu pellets from Pets at Home.

The other stuff I get from Galens garden that they like are the dried nettles, dandelion, ribwort plantain (tried them on the broadleaf plantain too but they didnt really like it!) The sunflower leaves, apple leaves, cut raspberry leaves, the tree leaf and herb mix, cornflowers, Willow leaves and the grass tube toys theyve also loved.
Oh and I buy them the 1kg mixed cereal grass which they go mad for.

THANK YOU!

I'm browsing their website at the moment (what better thing to do on Friday evening than buying piggy treats, right!) and I'll be ordering some stuff. Thank god for parcel forwarding companies, such "fancy" stuff just aren't available around here.

It's an expensive business " just browsing" though isn't it? I can't resist buying things for my piggies be it another type of pellet, yet another type of hay or a new cosy nest!

Right! Last week, I was just browsing Amazon, found great cozies, bought six (!) of them, then remembered my third piggy didn't have a snuggle safe, bought one, and put a bag of Firendly readi oats (because what self-respecting piggy slave would fail to buy a treat when online shopping)... and forgot entirely what human thing I was browsing for in the first place. Oh, well, the pigs are happy.

Sorry, last question!

Does the cereal grass mix contain a lot of seedheads? Mine prefer the seedheads over the other parts of the plant, so if it's mostly blades and leaves, I don't think they'll like it as much.

There are a fair few seed heads, below is my current bag and its quite lacking in seed heads compared to how it normally is, its mainly wheat heads. Mine love the oat seedheads but they do like the other bits too which I wasnt expecting. They do smaller bags which is what I started with to see if they liked it.
