Which tend to live longer, boars or sows?

None whatsoever. It is just like their personalities- it is based on the piggies and situation, not their gender.
Take the best care of the piggies you have for the longest lives your piggies can have.

Erm... I was talking about trends/averages. I really don't need to be told to look after my pigs' health! ;)

it varies i supose like any animal or humans, some seem to go on forever in great health then just go one day, or some dont live as long even if there care has been great. I had piggies when i was 14 and my last one go was a sow and she was 6 I'm 20 now. Most of mine have lived to a good old age with no problems my boars did seem to go a bit earlier than my sows but i dont think it was to do with their sex at all just the way it was :)

:) I think we all have our beliefs according to what we have seen seen. I've kept purebreds that have been sensibly bred from that have lived till nearly seven and rescue pigs till they were 6. But have had others from those groups that have left us at 18 months or so.
My sows have all lived longer, but then i keep more sows than boars....

Even the best cared for piggies can leave us at an early age while others that live in the same pen can go on forever it seems. Just my thoughts :)

Thanks. :) I'm just interested in people's experiences/views - particularly since I've only ever kept sows so far.

I think kimmie was just saying that if anybody's pigs are looked after well then you can expect them to live a long life, I don't think she was telling you that that's what you should do if that makes any sense ;)

I know - it's OK, I'm not taking offence (and hope I haven't offended you either, Kimmie!) :)

Then I would say that by giving the best care poss you are helping them live out their life to the fullest/oldest whether thats 12 months or 7 years. I've had some 5 year old rescue pigs that have been kept in conditions where there were rats, rabbits, mud, and they'd been passed from pillar to post but the last I heard both were still alive at age 7. One was an Agouti by the way :) and was thinking today my purebred Texel sow lived to nearly 7 and she was an Agouti... and a Rexoid. ;) But only 2nd generation Texel (I think) maybe that makes a difference ::)

Awww... that's good to hear, Karen. :) I think I've become paranoid by some of the experiences I've had! ;D

I think its depends on the individual pig, ive had sows since i was 14, and have just lost one, yet ive lost a few sows along the way when they were only 2 and 2 1/2, they were kept in healthy condition and treated with the best care and the same as all my other pigs (they lived together) ive got 2 boars now but they are only 5 months old..so i cant really comment on which lives longer, but i wouldnt say eiother outlive the other.
