I bought Minnie & Mitch a snuggly bed each when I went to the NEGPR 5th Anniversary do last week.

I've since noticed white chalky stains where Minnie has been lying. Is this likely to be calcium which could be a warning of some something like UTI?

Anyone else experienced this & should I cut down on any of their veggies. Minnie is over 4 & is healthy in all other aspects. She's currently living with Mitch, a neutered boar who I think is less than a year old.

I actually heard that a little calcium is sort of normal in pigs, Leeland has had it more since she has gotten older. As long as when you streak your finger in it (eeeew - but necessary) it should feel fine, soft, like a smooth cream or paste. It shouldnt feel gritty at all! Those are the dangerous crystals. I think sometimes that seasonality on hay can make a huge difference, it's a natural product capable of great variation if the producers source it from several areas. Even different fields can have drastically different soil compositions depending on incline, drainage and how thin the humus is! (yay degree!).

Keep a fine ear out for squeeky toilet times or blood. Those are definitive, otherwise just slow down on your high calcium veggies or treats. sorry I'm pants at naming high calcium vegetables.

Thanks for that, it's just like a fine chalk dust. I'm listening for any abnormal sounds coming from the run but only the normal sounds. It could have been like this for weeks but she was sleeping mainly on hay before I got the beds.

My guineas's wee looks white & chalky when they wee on their fleece beds & then it dries (mucky boys!) but I think this is pretty normal.

I asked my vet years ago and she said its normal as long as its not gritty not to worry about it, a lot of it depends on how much they drink as to thickness. You only tend to notice it when they are on fleece as it stains, I found worse on my boys beds trust me :))

That's right, I didn't notice anything till I got these fleece snuggly beds. I've double checked & it is just white chalky dust, not gritty.
