Birdie

Following on from my earlier thread where I posted about my sow who has been purring and wiggling her bottom which I put down to her ovulating. Today I found some white discharge and somebody on this forum suggested that maybe 'he' was a 'she' :{

Since then I've witnessed 'her' chasing the smaller sow and cornering her purring! 'She' then tried to jump on her! The smaller sow was having none of it but she continued to chase her all the while making the purring noise.

They stopped and sat quietly for a while but have now started again. Does this sound like 'she' is actually a 'he' and I've bought a mis-sexed guinea pig? Or could it be that they are both sows and one is being aggresive?

What should I do! I don't have another cage to separate them! Please help - would rather not have babies!

didnt want to read and run.

Honestly dont know the answer and hopefully someone will come across shortly.

Have you tried sexing them yourselves there is lots of information around on here for that i think. If you really are concerned maybe try making a partition in the middle of the cage until you know more.

Hope all is sorted soon
xx

Seperate them would be my option. When I had to seperate one of my buns I just put one in the bathroom, lifted all chewables things, put down some newspaper, filled a little bowl of water and a bowl of food and kept one there for the night. Would also say get her/him to the vet tomorrow to see what sex it is to be safe.

check there bits see if they look the same or different might give you an idea?

if they look the same hopefully you have sows then it could be just that she

is in season, sows do chase each other round at this time. maybe someone

with better experience could help you more.

Yeah sexing guinea pigs I think it's very easy with males there is an obvious penis unlike say with buns where you have to kind of fiddle around to see anything.

The situation could be that both are sows, one is in heat and is mounting the other!

Sounds crazy but can you take snaps of their private parts get someone to hold and take a pic and we can maybe sex them for you. Do the private parts look the same?

If in doubt I would seperate though, do you have a run or anything for the other pig to go in?

Have found an old hamster cage which is a Rody style one so identical design to their own cage. It's pretty large, and the smaller sow is only 10 weeks old so not very big. I put her in there, but within 5 minutes they were absolutely SCREAMING for each other and pacing up and down. My little girl started crying because the piggies were so upset so I put them back together - and the purring and chasing has started again - also teeth chattering from the one I suspect is the male.

I don't know what to think.

I've tried to sex him/her but she/he is quite long haired so it's difficult to see, especially when she/he is struggling so much.

It could just be dominant behaviour. I have taken pigs to vets for sexing they don't charge much if anything. I would seperate but have them next to one another so they can still see each other if possible and side track them with some nice veggies.

Oh they sound like they have you up the wall, I've been there too with dominant pigs. Best of luck with them!

Definately have a look at both of them and see if they look the same, are you able to upload pics of both to this thread so we can look.

My girls sometimes hump one another. Honey B once humped Murphy neutered boars head! he was not impressed.

Keep an eye on them perhaps but them on your laps while you upload pics for us to see if we can help.

Try not to worry I'm sure

OK, have managed to look at both their parts (and get bitten in the process!). The younger little sow just seems to have a 'line' whereas the bigger, suspected make seems to have more of a 'hole' with a white blob in the middle that looks like the tip of a grain of rice? Neither of them have anything sort of swelling that resembles testicles. Have tried to get pics but they don't come out as anything.

Any ideas?

Have checked the pics (thanks guys) and would say the suspected male looks a mixture of both! Will get them to the vets tomorrow.

If the 'male' is only 10 weeks he might not have developed obvious testicles yet - I think they can develop at different rates, but the boys do have more of an 'o' than a 'v' shape...

Hopefully the vet will clear things up for you!

http://cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm

this might help also its a very good site;)
if you do have one male and one female its almost a guarantee that the sow will be pregnant, all it really takes is one second with each other, the biggest problem's the fact that they can mate at 3-4 weeks of age so no doubt if they are sexed incorrectly then the sow would have already been pregnant before you got her anyway.i hope all go's well let us know how you go xxxxx

Update

Hi Peeps

Have just come back from the vet - and they are two girls! :(|) Thank goodness. They did have trouble sexing the one I wasn't sure about (Rosie), and had to get a second opinion from the other vet, but after pulling the poor love about a bit they confirmed definately a girl.

Her behaviour is just because she's being a bit dominant whilst in season. They've calmed down a lot today, but if it happens again I'll just separate them for a while to give Poppy (the younger one) a rest! Vet said they're both in great condition and not to worry about the discharge unless it keeps happening.

Am so very pleased now - thanks to all of you who helped.

Have attached a little pic of the monsters who've given me a sleepless night! Poppy on left, Rosie on right.

If you had a male and a female, you would have the rumbling, bum wriggling and mounting daily.

With two sows you can have it whenever one of them is in season for about a day about every two weeks apart. It will stop as soon as her hormones calm down. The first time this happens can really panic you - it did panic me as well!

Of course, the other sow is none too keen; but I have found them generally rather patient with their friends "mountainering" the tighter a bond they were having. Tomorrow they will be hopefully quite cuddly and friendly with each other. No need to separate them during that time! Not every season will be as bad as that; quite often they can have their season fairly unnoticed.
